The Chevrolet Spark Lite was introduced locally in 2010 and was manufactured at the General Motors plant in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The model came in two derivatives, the base model L and higher specified and more powerful LS. Not only was the latter higher specified but also offered a slightly larger and more powerful engine.
One of the biggest challenges for new drivers familiarising themselves with the vehicle's dimensions, that is why smaller vehicles are usually popular amongst first time buyers. While the Chevrolet Spark Lite is definitely compact enough, we find out if it is indeed a sound choice for new drivers.
Powertrain
As alluded to earlier, the Chevrolet Spark Lite in L guise came fitted with a smaller engine than the higher specified LS variant. Under the bonnet of the L, customers can expect a 0.8-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox which sends the 38 kW and 69 Nm of torque to the front wheels.
The Chevrolet Spark Lite LS also sends its power to the front wheels via a 5-speed gearbox. This model gets its motivation from a 1.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol motor producing 49 kW and 87 Nm of torque. Even though the powertrains lacked in performance, it made up for it in frugality as LS owners can expect an average return of 5.8 L / 100 km and L owners around 5.1 L / 100 km.
Safety
Whether you are considering a Chevrolet Spark Lite for yourself or for a child, one key area to take note of is the safety features, or rather the lack thereof. While both derivatives came fitted reinforced side collision protection bars in the doors, only the LS variant offers an airbag for the driver should an accident occur. The model also only offer standard disc brakes and does not feature any ABS technology or electronic stability programs.
Comfort
While the small hatchback offers five seats, the rear bench will get quite snug if more than two adults occupy it. The boot is also quite small as it's only rated for 170-litres of luggage. The LS model benefits from central locking, electric windows at the front as well as air conditioning and a radio with a CD player.
Verdict
While indeed the low initial investment, running costs and compact design of the Chevrolet Spark Lite will appeal to a new driver, we would recommend finding an alternative that features more standard safety equipment. While small bumper bashes or dings picked up in the parking lot due to inexperience might be cheap and quick to fix, it is in those scenarios where the accident is slightly more serious where one wish to have more protection for the occupants.
