Is the BMW 2 Series reliable?

We take a closer look at the known fault and common problems with the F22 generation BMW 2 Series to help you ascertain whether or not it will make a good buy.

When BMW gave us the 1 Series coupe, they couldn't have envisioned the model doing as well as it did. It was a fresh break away from the hatch styling of the 5-door 1 Series and while initially perceived to be awkward in its design, won favour with consumers. This particular model gave rise to the stand-alone 2 Series, a front-engined, rear-drive coupe with handsome proportions and a manageable size.

The first BMW 2 Series, launched in 2014, was available in coupe and convertible body styles and many likened it to the original 3 Series, the box-shaped E30 in terms of its size and convenience. This made it a sale success, despite the ever-growing trend of crossovers, SUVs and 5-door offerings. It allowed BMW to separate the 4-door models from the 2-door models and while this didn't last too long (thank you Gran Coupes), the BMW 2 Series is still well received.

In 2021 we received the second-generation BMW 2 Series, the G42, to replace the F22 2 Series of old. BMW has not given us a convertible 2 Series with this new generation but we've already seen the 2 Series Gran Coupe (which is based on the front-drive 1 Series) and more recently, the release of the M2. As this model is still very new, we are unable to gauge how reliable it is yet. We will look at the reliability of the F22 generation.

BMW 2 Series reliability

JD Power, a reputable source for vehicle reliability studies, ranked the BMW 2 Series highly in previous years with the model scoring 83 out of 100 for reliability. This suggests that the BMW 2 Series is without major faults or flaws.

Some owners have reported that their BMWs have had to return to the dealership for EGR canister issues, a small fix that doesn't hinder the performance of the vehicle. Even the BMW M2 fares well as it has been fitted with the N55 engine, doing away with the troublesome N54. Competition models are fitted with the S55 engine, also regarded as being a durable and reliable power unit.

There have been no recalls of the BMW 2 Series.
