The BMW 2 Series first arrived locally in 2014 and could be had in coupé, cabriolet and MPV form. However, the German automaker revised the range line-up with the introduction of the second generation and instead of an MPV, they added a Gran Coupé. The big appeal of the 2 Series line-up currently and previously is that it provides exciting sports car models at prices more affordable than the larger 3 Series and 4 Series.
While BMW recently unveiled a new 2 Series coupé, the first generation models still look really good and offer good value on the used market. There are, however, a few key areas to inspect before you sign the dotted line and we explain them here.

Reliability
For this article, we specifically focus our attention on the 2017 model year BMW 2 series. According to a J.D. Power Customer Survey conducted on this particular model, the vehicle actually fared quite well across a variety of categories. We, however, pivot our attention to the reliability segment of the survey.
In this area, the vehicle is rated on the level of defects or malfunctions and design flaws experienced by vehicle owners. This is related to every area of the vehicle from the mechanical operation to the electronics and infotainment system. The 2017 BMW 2 Series coupé scored an impressive 88 out of a possible 100 which means that it is quite a reliable vehicle with few areas of concern.
Things to look out for before buying
Considering that the 2 Series in coupé and cabriolet form are quite sporty, it is not hard to believe that the previous owner might have driven it enthusiastically every so often. This is why, during your inspection of the vehicle, look at the exhaust for blue or black smoke that could indicate issues with the engine or turbo. Furthermore, listen for any rattling noises from the engine for the exact same reason.
For diesel models, check for any issues relating to the diesel particulate filter, especially for older models with low kilometres, as this indicates that it was mostly used for short city commutes. Then, as always, inspect the vehicle's history to find out if it received all its services and if oil changes happened on schedule. From here you merely want to inspect the body for any dents or scuffs, the wheels for any signs of herb damage and whether all the electronics work perfectly.
Verdict
Based on the reliability score achieved in the J.D. Power Customer Survey and the high build quality, it is safe to say that the BMW 2 Series will make for a good used car if it fits your lifestyle.
