Is a used Audi S3 a good car?

We investigate to find out if a used Audi S3 is a good choice as a used car.

Buying a Car

If you are in the market for a used Audi S3, you are most likely looking at the third-generation model that was produced between 2013 and 2020. This iteration of the S3 could be had in three body styles, including a hatch, sedan and two-door cabriolet, however, all of which are motivated by an identical powertrain.

Under the bonnet features a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder petrol capable of 228 kW and 400 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled to a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends the power to all four wheels. Audi claims that both the sedan and hatch or rather Sportback derivatives will reach 100 km/h from stationary in just 4.6 seconds while the cabriolet will complete the same sprint in 5.1 seconds. All three derivatives have a limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Reliability

The Audi S3 is based on the Audi A3 model range and except for the styling on both the interior and exterior and a variety of powertrain, drivetrain and suspension components, it largely remains the same. As such, one can expect the reliability of both models to be somewhat similar. As the S3 is sold in fewer numbers than the regular A3 model, there isn't a standalone survey available.

However, when we look at a recent "WhatCar?" survey for the Audi A3, we can see that the model scored very well not only on its own but within its segment. The 2013-2020 model year Audi A3 scored an impressive 98% overall for reliability and as the S3 shares so many components with the A3, it is safe to assume it would have scored similarly.

Areas to look out for before purchasing

As the Audi S3 is a performance model, it would have been used more often in spirited driving scenarios than its more practical A3 sibling. As such, when inspecting the vehicle, keep an eye out for any body damage or signs of repair as well as the condition of the wheels. It is also very important to check the underside to see if any damage has occurred to the chassis or suspension components or floor.

From an operational perspective, there have been reports of leaking water pumps, fuel pump cam follower wearing and sticky oil breather valves. Those are the most serious items to look out for, however, customers should also check for rattling from the central console and a creaking infotainment screen.

Verdict

Overall, the Audi S3 seems to be a good choice as a used vehicle as it proves to be quite reliable. However, the maintenance history and how well the previous owner cared for the vehicle will greatly affect how your ownership experience might be. Try to, as always, find an example with a full service history and well-documented maintenance records for peace of mind.
