The new Volkswagen Amarok is yet to see an official launch in South Africa but Cape Town did play host to the international launch of the model late last year. Recent releases from the company have given us a brief overview of the model range and the indicated pricing for the double cab models. The vehicle is available now and you'd be able to walk into a Volkswagen dealership and order one for yourself, but what should you expect to pay for one?

There's no skirting around the well-known fact that the new, second-generation Amarok is a joint venture with Ford. Before you scoff at this, Ford has been making the highly-successful Ranger for many a year and their experience in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector is amongst the best, dating back to Henry Ford's days. All that translates into is a better experience for the Amarok consumer.

This second-generation Volkswagen Amarok is longer and larger with shorter overhangs. This does two things: it increases the interior space and makes it more capable off-road. It can haul up to 1.16 tonnes of cargo and the load bed is designed to accept a Euro pallet without problems.

It's also packed with advanced driver assistance systems and safety features including a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, park assist, and up to six different driving modes for various conditions.

Variants

Customers can choose from no fewer than 4 different engines and 5 trim levels. Throw in the variation in the double cab and single cab, and you have a wide range of models to choose from. The five trims consist of the base Amarok and then progressively climbs to include more specification and technology. You'll have to choose from the Amarok, Life, Style, PanAmericana and Aventura trim levels and then select the appropriate engine for your intended use. It is worth noting that not all engines are available in all trims.

These are the engines you get to choose from:

2.0 TDI 110 kW
4-cylinder turbodiesel mated to a 5-speed manual, producing 110 kW and 350 Nm torque. Claimed fuel consumption of 6.9 l/100km.

2.0 TDI 125 kW
4-cylinder turbodiesel mated to a 6-speed manual and 2WD. 125 kW and 405 Nm with a claimed fuel consumption of 6.9 l/100km. This engine is also available in 4MOTION AWD with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Fuel consumption on the 4MOTION versions are a claimed 7.1 (manual) and 7.7 l/100km for the automatic.

2.0 BiTDI 154 kW 4MOTION
4-cylinder, twin-turbo turbodiesel paired with a 10-speed automatic to produce 154 kW and 500 Nm with a claimed fuel consumption of 7.5 l/100km.

3.0 TDI V6 184 kW 4MOTION
A 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel that produces 184 kW and 600 Nm while paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox and 4MOTION AWD. Fuel consumption a claimed 8.4 l/100km.

Pricing

In the table below, you'll find the various models on offer (double cabs only) along with their current retail price, excluding extras, value-added services, or on-the-road costs. In the third column, you'll find the estimated monthly repayments when financing a new Amarok on a finance agreement with a bank. Naturally, there are various ways of financing a vehicle, be it through the dealership's in-house financial service or through a bank.

In the below examples, we've assumed the standard model of a finance agreement over 72 months with a 10% deposit, no residual or balloon, and an interest rate of 12%. Your individual credit profile will dictate what terms you qualify for so be sure to check with your bank or finance house ahead of time to see what you qualify for. You'll be able to head on over to the AutoTrader Finance Calculator to enter your own parameters to see what you would pay with your finance agreement.
