Two body styles are on offer in the latest Mercedes-Benz GLC range, a traditional SUV-style body and a coupé-like creation. While one can't truly call it a coupé, as it has 4-doors, Mercedes-Benz does, and we'll just have to accept that! The GLC Coupé isn't available locally with the 207 kW petrol engine, and customers can only choose from two 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines. Here's how they perform.
Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d Coupé Performance
The Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d Coupé is available in both Avantgarde and AMG-Line trims. This model is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine with mild hybrid assistance. It uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup that employs a second-generation integrated starter-generator. This not only adds to the final power output but also improves the driving experience, filling in where the turbocharger of the diesel engine can't.
This unit produces 145 kW of power and 440 Nm torque, but when you add in the e-Boost functionality of the electric assistance, those figures are bumped up by 17 kW and 200 Nm, respectively. This means that you have 162 kW and 640 Nm on hand, which is ideal for overtaking and joining the freeway.
It sends power to all four wheels via a 9G-Tronic 9-speed gearbox and the intelligent 4MATIC AWD system for improved traction and safety. The 220d will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in only 8.1 seconds and go on to a top speed of 225 km/h.
Mercedes-Benz claims fuel consumption figures of 5.1 l/100km on the combined cycle.
Mercedes-Benz GLC 300d Coupé Performance
In the 300d version of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé, you also get a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel, but with an increased output. This one also benefits from a mild hybrid system with a 48-volt system filling in the gaps and helping reduce the overall fuel consumption.
It sends power to all four wheels through a 9G-Tronic gearbox and a 4MATIC AWD system for improved road-holding and additional safety.
You can expect to call on 198 kW of power and 550 Nm torque from the diesel engine alone, with the hybrid assistance boosting that momentarily by 17 kW and 200 Nm. This helps the 300d sprint to 100 km/h from a standstill in only 6.4 seconds and race onto a top speed of 249 km/h.
Mercedes-Benz claims that if driven conservatively, you can expect to return fuel consumption figures of 5.5 l/100km on the combined cycle.
