It's the battle of the Chinese SUVs as the Haval Jolion S takes on the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and the BAIC Beijing X55. Here's which one we would choose!

The Jolion S is the sportiest model within Haval's compact SUV range, offering all the expected bells and whistles with a more potent drivetrain. Today, we are comparing the Jolion S with two rivals in the form of the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and the BAIC Beijing X55, but which one would we choose? Our trio today feature similar powertrains but are nearly identical in price.

Haval Jolion S

Powertrain and performance

Powering the Jolion S is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 130Kw and 270Nm, sent through the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.5 L/100km, and the 0-100km/h is not quoted.

Standard equipment

There is only one Jolion S model, and it comes with LED headlights/ fog lamps, a six-way electrically adjustable seat for the driver, ambient interior lighting, a panoramic roof, a wireless smartphone charger,  artificial leather seats, a colour screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, a digitised instrument cluster, climate control,  adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot assist, 18.0-inch alloy wheels, 6 Airbags, ISOFIX, keyless entry and start, front and rear PDC, and a reverse camera.

Safety

The Jolion received a 5-star safety rating from ANCAP in 2022.

Practicality

The Jolion boasts a 337-litre boot, seating for five occupants and 168mm of ground clearance.

Chery Tiggo 7 Pro

Powertrain and performance

Powering the Tiggo 7 Pro is a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 108kW and 210Nm that is sent through the front wheels via a CVT. Fuel consumption is claimed at 6.8 L/100km, and the 0-100km/h time is not quoted.

Standard equipment

In Executive guise, the Tiggo 7 Pro comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights/ fog lights, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, a colour touchscreen infotainment system, ambient interior lighting, a panormaic roof, climate control, keyless entry/start, artificial leather seats, electrically adjustable driver's seat as well as front and rear PDC with a reverse camera.

Safety

The Tiggo 7 Pro was crash-tested by the C-NCAP upon its release, where it achieved a 5-Star rating.

Practicality

 The Tiggo 7 Pro features seating for five and a 475-litre boot that can expand to 1 500-litres, making it the most practical vehicle in this comparison.

At R477 900, the Tiggo 7 Pro offers excellent value.


BAIC Beijing X55

Powertrain and performance

Powering the X55 is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 130kW and 305Nm sent through the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.2 L/100km, and a 0-100km/h of 7.8 seconds is provided.

Standard equipment

In Premium specification, the X55's features are similar to the Tiggo 7 Pro; however, the semi-autonomous driving aids are missing in this model, and it features 'regular' cruise control as a result.

Safety

The X55 was crash-tested by C-NCAP, achieving a 5-Star rating.

Practicality

The X55 boasts five seats and 350 litres of boot space, making it similar to the Jolion.

Price and value proposition

At R480 900 for the Elegance model, the Moka offers the most negligible value among the trio.
