Haval Jolion Hybrid vs ICE: Running cost comparison

We spent a few weeks driving Haval's Jolion HEV recently, a series-parallel hybrid crossover that doesn't need to be plugged in but offers superb fuel efficiency and respectable performance. During our time with the car, we couldn't help but think of its price premium over the internal combustion-only Jolion. Purchase price

Monthly instalments are calculated throughout 60 months with a 10% deposit and no balloon or residual. The interest rate is set at 12%.

With the instalment parameters, the HEV will work out at R11 010  monthly over 60 months.

Haval Jolion 1.5T Luxury auto

The 1.5T will work out at R8 473 monthly with the instalment parameters over 60 months.

 

Fuel consumption

There tends to be a big difference between claimed and real-world fuel economy with vehicles, and this proves true with our pair of Jolions, too, with the HEV achieving a figure of 5.8 L/100km versus a 5.0 L/100km claim and the ICE version achieving 9.1 L/100km versus a 7.5 L/100km. Since our test spans five years, we have set the fuel price at R25 per litre and the average annual mileage covered by each car at 20 000km. This means that the HEV will cost the owner R145 000 in fuel over half a decade, while the ICE version would cost R225 000, a difference of R80 000.

Service plans

Both models come with a 5-year/ 60 000km service plan.

Total cost

Looking at the total costs, the HEV, with interest, will cost a total of the HEV will be R660 600 plus the R145 000 for fuel, totalling R805 600. The ICE will cost R508 483 with interest from the finance deal, plus the R225 000 for fuel, totalling R733 483. Using our parameters, this means that the ICE car will be R72 117 cheaper than the HEV version. It is essential to factor in that both cars will require paid-for maintenance after the 60 000km mark; however, we envision these service costs to be comparable in price.

Verdict

Having looked at the data in the first five years of ownership, we would say that the 1.5T ICE Jolion will have lower running costs, again emphasising our government's need to start incentivising the purchase of new energy vehicles(NEVs) if we, as a car buying nation, are to incorporate more electrification into our national car pool.
