Is the Renault Megane RS a good car?

In European markets the Megane RS cries king as one of the performance hot hatches of choice, locally though, buyers seem averse to its charms and impressive stat sheet. The Megane RS can quite literally drive circles around some of the other performance hatchbacks that were sold in SA but went largely unappreciated by locals who have a penchant for German brands. With impressive performance and driving dynamics, the Megane RS is a sledgehammer used to tame the track.

Who is the Renault Megane RS a good car for?

The Renault Megane RS is a good car for those seeking excitement from their drive. As a left-field option, the Megane RS allows individuals to stand out from the throngs of GTIs and STs that roam the streets.

Is the Renault Megane RS a good first car?

If one can handle the price and are well versed in driving dynamics the Megane RS could do well with a new driver however we don't recommend in-experienced drivers climbing behind the wheel.

Is the Renault Megane RS a good family car?

Despite having 5 doors, the Megane RS has a heavily tuned suspension and minimal packing space for all the needs of a family and as such is not very comfortable. Families should rather look elsewhere.

Is there a Hybrid Renault Megane RS?

As a performance vehicle that is tuned for the track, there is no hybrid option available.

What’s it like to drive?

Reviewer's opinion

Once you hit the start button and the new engine fires into life that you see where the efforts were spent. The new 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is down on capacity from the previous 2.0-litre offering but despite this, produces 5 hp more than the rather special R.S. 275 Trophy, producing 280 hp.

205 kW and 390 Nm is what you get from this F1-technology-infused lump and when mated to the notchy, direct 6-speed gearbox, you end up with a rather exciting drivetrain package. It's good for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint of 5.8-seconds, which is coincidently the same as the flappy-paddle alternative which comes with launch control.
