Is the Isuzu D-MAX a good car?

The Isuzu D-Max bakkie, previously known as the Isuzu KB, has stood the test of time and is a firm South African favourite. Isuzu KBs with a million kilometres on the odometer, in full working condition, are not unheard of.

Who is the Isuzu D-MAX a good car for?

There's a D-MAX for everyone in the line-up. Whether you need it for work or play, you're sure to find the D-MAX you need.

Is the Isuzu D-MAX a good first car?

The D-MAX is a value-for-money proposition and is one of the few workhorse bakkies that offers traction control in the lower-spec models. The Fleetside Safety variant is the D-MAX bakkie you need to be looking at if you're an inexperienced driver.

Is the Isuzu D-MAX a good family car?

The D-MAX range of double cabs make excellent family vehicles. The amount of safety featues you get is model-dependant, of course.

Is there a Hybrid Isuzu D-MAX model?

In the South African line-up, we only have diesel derivatives.

What’s it like to drive?

Reviewer's opinion

"The engine remains unchanged though, and that's good news for fans of the KB 300 D-TEQ. It's still the same 130kW and 380Nm turbodiesel inline-four-cylinder that we've come to love and appreciate. Low down torque is still impressive and while the engine will run out of puff higher up in the rev range, there's seldom a need to wring it out past 3500rpm."

What does it look like?

Exterior

The Isuzu D-MAX looks fetching in X-Rider garb, and offers good value for money.

Interior

The Isuzu D-MAX X-Rider is now also available with a 3.0-litre diesel engine.

What is the Isuzu D-MAX like inside?

The D-MAX has a robust, hard-wearing interior that is built to last. The flagship LX models have all the bells and whistles along with leather seats and a large infotainment touchscreen system.

Style

Yet again, the upper-crust models will look and feel considerably more stylish than the entry-level models. The X-Rider models offer a good combination of style, comfort features, and value for money.

Tech features

The more you spend, the more you get in terms of tech and features in general. Visit isuzu.co.za to compare specs on each model. Below are just a few of the highlights in the X-Rider models (but are not limited to X-Rider models):

  • Optional 9-inch Alpine touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, rearview camera and Sat-nav
  • AM/FM Radio, 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Audio streaming and hands-free phone (standard)
  • Brake override system
  • Rear differential lock
  • Daytime running lamps
  • Keyless entry

Which is the cheapest Isuzu D-MAX?

The cheapest single cab is the Isuzu D-Max 250C, priced at R318 800. However, if you need those above-mentioned safety features, the Isuzu D-MAX 250 Fleetside Safety model, at R373 000, is the one. It's tough as nails, too. And you can always add an optional rear differential lock if needed.
