The long-serving Toyota Land Cruiser is synonymous with rugged offroad pursuits, becoming the vehicle of choice for those living life off the beaten path. The blocky squared-off design has not changed much in 40 years, and neither would it seem has the drivetrain, which usually consisted of a 4l engine coupled to a manual transmission.

This all changed in 2024 when Toyota announced that they would take the 2.8 GD6 diesel from the famed Hilux bakkie and offer it up to the Land Cruiser chassis. With these new changes in place, the question of whether the auto box would also follow came up.

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series a petrol or a diesel?

As of 2024, the Land Cruiser 70 series will have a number of engine options: there will be a 4.0l V6 petrol, a 4.2l inline-6 diesel, a 2.8l inline-4 diesel, and a 4.5l V8 diesel. The 2.8 GD6 engines are only available with the 6-speed auto transmission, while the balance of the engine lineup only gets a 5-speed manual gearbox. There are plans to introduce new auto gearboxes for these bigger engines in the future.
