Chinese automaker Chery has expanded its Tiggo 8 Pro model range with the addition of the Max, which now gets a potent 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. The Chery looks like a compelling package, but how do its running costs compare with two competent rivals?
Today we will compare the Tiggo 8 Pro Max with two similarly priced rivals, namely the Haval H6 GT and the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. All three models feature petrol engines and automatic gearboxes. The question today is, which has the lowest running costs?

Comparing the trio
Purchase price
The models that we have chosen for this comparison are competitors from a pricing and body-style perspective, with turbocharged petrol engines and automatic gearboxes. Monthly instalments are calculated throughout 72 months with a 10% deposit and no balloon or residual. The interest rate is set at 11%.
Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max 2.0TGDI 390T Executive
With the instalment parameters in place, the Chery will work out at R10 791 per month over 72 months.
Haval H6 GT 2.0GDIT 4WD Super Luxury
With the instalment parameters in place, the Havai will work out at R10 791 per month over 72 months.
Volkswagen TiguanAllspace 1.4TSI 110kW
With the instalment parameters in place, the Volkswagen will work out at R10 779 per month over 72 months.
Fuel consumption
Our contenders all feature turbocharged petrol engines, however, the Chery and Haval have 2.0-litre motors whereas the Volkswagen makes do with a 1.4-litre mill. From a power and torque perspective, the Chery is the clear winner, followed by the Haval, even when weight is factored in. Both the Haval and Chery are quite a bit heavier on fuel than their claimed figures in real-world testing. We would be confident stating that the Volkswagen would be the most fuel-efficient among the trio.
Service plans
Our trio have varying service plans, with the Haval having the least competitive plan at 5-year/60 000km, while the Volkswagen gets a 5-year/90 000 plan, placing it second. The Chery wins with an impressive 7-year/90 000km plan.
Verdict
Having looked at the data, in the first five years of ownership, we feel that the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace will be more affordable to run than both the Haval and Chery.
