The Changan brand made its first local appearance in 2007 and after a slow uptake in sales, closed its doors. In 2013, Jiangling Motors Corporation took over the local distribution and in 2017 introduced the third version of the Star model range. The range consists of three body styles, a two-seater single cab, four-seater double cab and a two- five- or seven-seater minivan.

Upon the first impression, the entire range display small, however, could be just big enough for that small new business venture. Also, don't let the size fool you as this little offering can carry quite the load, but more on that later. All three models have a simplistic yet modern design on the exterior and this theme continues to the interior.
Engine
The single cab, double cab and minivan are all powered by the same 1.3-litre petrol motor. The 4-cylinder engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and is capable of 72 kW and 119 Nm of torque. While this might seem very little, it provides enough power to transport goods on the back of the pick-ups and enough to transport up to seven people in the minivan. The motor powers the rear wheel and will accelerate the vehicle to a top speed of 120 km/h.
Fuel consumption
One of the most important aspects when purchasing a vehicle for yourself or your business are the ownership costs. One key attribute that will significantly affect the ownership cost is fuel consumption. While most manufacturers claimed figures are achieved in perfect conditions and sometimes not reflect real-world numbers, they serve as a good indicator as to what is possible with a vehicle.
In the case of the Changan Star 5 model range, the Chinese automaker claims a return of 7.2 L / 100 km with the single cab model. The double cab promises a return of 7.8 L / 100 km while the minivan claim 6.5 L / 100 km. These are most likely to increase when you add load to the vehicles and should be taken into consideration.
Load capacity
Changan indicates that each model has a load capacity of 1 metric ton. For the single cab model, this means more load can be placed on the 1520 mm wide and 2 750 mm long cargo box as there are only two occupants up front. The double-cab variant offers a slightly shorter cargo box, 2 060 mm, but provides for four seats. As such it will carry less load at the back but more occupants can enjoy the safety and comfort inside the vehicle cabin.
Similarly, the minivan offering also promises to carry a 1-ton load and can be specified to have two- five- or seven-seats depending on your intended use.
Trim levels
All three the offerings come in two trim levels, a standard level and the more premium Lux. While both trim levels ride on 14-inch steel wheels, the standard model is aimed more at utilitarian use with minimal niceties on the exterior or interior. The Lux model, however, benefits from body-colour bumpers, foglamps, air-condition, electric windows and an AM / FM radio with AUX input and two speakers.
