In 1994 Audi changed the way people looked at their station wagon range with the introduction of the RS2. Since then the German automaker has become known for its performance wagons and there are no signs of them slowing down. In 2019 Audi introduced its latest iteration of the RS4 model but have since fine-tuned the exterior, interior and infotainment system.
This newly updated iteration arrived locally during the early stages of 2021 and offers a variety of design, convenience and performance features. In this article, we will be focussing on all these new additions so that you know what to look out for on your test drive.
Exterior
One of the first characteristics of any Audi RS model that sets it apart is its styling. While bland is not a word that you would use to describe the predecessor, Audi spent more time on the exterior styling to bolster the dynamic design. Upfront customers will quickly notice the flatter and wider grille design and the three-dimensional honeycomb pattern finished in gloss black. The new design also omits the gloss black frame around the grille as found on the previous model.
Above the new grille also feature three new air inlets which hark back to those found on early rally cars from the German manufacturer. Audi also updated the headlamp design to compliment the new configuration and makes available matrix LED headlights with darkened bezels should customers want to bolster the performance theme. Speaking of the performance theme, Audi flared the already wide wheel arches for a more dramatic design.
At the rear feature new taillamp clusters as well as a connecting garnishing on the trunk lid which with items such as the side sills, front splitter and mirror housings, come in a matte aluminium but can be ordered in carbon fibre or gloss black finish.
Interior
Updates can also be found on the interior of the updated RS4 Avant. The dashboard has been revised to bolster the horizontal design layout while a new LED ambient lighting system is incorporated into the doors and centre console to accentuate the curves. The driver can also choose between 30 individual colours to bathe the interior.
On your test drive, also take note of the soft Nappa leather and honeycomb contrast stitching used on the Audi sport seats. Then run your hands over the multifunction steering wheel, transmission lever cover and notice the Alcantara with red contrast stitching.
MMI system
While you are taking in the interior design, you will want to pay closer attention to the revised 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen infotainment system fitted centrally. The new system connects to the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster or Audi virtual cockpit plus system in front of the driver to continuously provide the information requested by the driver.
The system also receives RS-specific programming to include MMI navigation plus software and information displays of the drive temperature, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, the quattro sport differential, the tyre pressure and the tyre temperature. The clever system also features Audi Connect services via the embedded SIM card.
While you would only be able to utilise your MyAudi app and Audi Connect services to the vehicle once you purchased it, the functionality includes online traffic information, point of interest search, satellite maps with live weather updates, car finder, remote lock/unlocking, speed and theft alerts.
