Isuzu's evergreen MU-X has just received a significant refresh for 2025, bringing enhanced styling, upgraded technology, and a striking new flagship model, the Onyx XT, into the mix. Now that the mu-X is wearing a sexier outfit, can it conquer the competition?
Fresh face, familiar capability
The MU-X's front fascia receives the most dramatic changes. Gone is the somewhat conservative styling of the outgoing model, replaced by a more assertive look featuring a redesigned grille (which reminds us of a particular German family SUV in top-spec Onyx XT trim, seen below) and sharper LED headlights. The overall effect is more contemporary and aligned with current design trends without alienating Isuzu's traditional customer base.

The changes around the back are equally notable. Updated tail lamps are connected by a new garnish strip across the tailgate—a styling cue that's become increasingly popular among premium SUVs. The MU-X lettering on the tailgate is also smaller.

The wheel designs have been refreshed, too. The standard LS and mid-range LSE models get 18-inch alloys, while the new range-topper sports 20-inch wheels with a distinctive finish, as seen below. Two new paint options, Eiger Grey Metallic and Biarritz Blue, join the lineup.
Does the once-humble MU-X, especially in top-spec trim, now look good enough to rival the slick-looking Ford Everest? We think so.
Interior upgrades
Inside the 2025 MU-X, the dashboard has been subtly revised rather than completely reimagined. The centrepiece is a 9-inch high-resolution touchscreen with wireless smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Perhaps the most impressive addition is the new 360-degree camera system available on higher-spec models. This system is ideal for escaping from the school parking lot or nailing a tricky manoeuvre on a 4x4 trail.

The driver information display has also been updated with better graphics. However, ISUZU has wisely retained physical gauges for critical information – a nod to the practical nature of their typical customer.
Seat upholstery patterns have been reworked for a more premium feel, and new interior colour accents help brighten up what was previously a somewhat monotone cabin. These aren't revolutionary changes but address feedback from current owners who wanted a slightly more interesting cabin.

More on the Onyx XT flagship model
This new range-topping 3.0-litre 4x4 model stands out with distinctive design elements including the aforementioned black grille, metallic Light Magnetite bumper accents, gloss black roof rails, and Onyx black side mirrors.
The Onyx treatment continues with the model's bespoke 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels featuring a smoky clear coating. You can choose from four exclusive colours: Eiger Grey Metallic, Dolomite White Pearl, Onyx Black Mica, and Mercury Silver Metallic.
Inside, the Onyx XT creates a premium yet sporty atmosphere with exclusive red ambient lighting on the dashboard and doors, complemented by white footwell illumination. The leather seats feature red stitching, and additional USB Type-C ports for front and rear passengers ensure the latest smartphones can be connected.
Power and performance
The MU-X continues to offer two turbodiesel engines. The proven 3.0-litre powerplant still delivers 140kW and 450Nm of torque and is available in LS, LSE, and Onyx XT specifications. Notably, the Isuzu D-MAX with the same engine beat its counterparts from Ford and Toyota in a drag race, so you can be sure you'll have enough pulling and overtaking power, whatever you plan on hauling along with you on holiday.
Those with a smaller budget might prefer the 1.9-litre variant in the entry-level LS model, offering 110kW and 350Nm and claimed fuel consumption of 7.0 L/100km.
Both engines are paired with smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmissions. The 1.9-litre is available in 4x2 configuration, while the more powerful 3.0-litre comes in both 4x2 and 4x4 options. The 4x4 variants feature a diff-lock and low-range transfer case for serious off-road capability.
Isuzu also revised the suspension with larger diameter shock absorbers for a smoother, more pliant drive.
Driving the 2025 MU-X
After some town driving, we tested the MU-X's off-road capabilities on a short but scenic track near Knorhoek wine farm. As always, the MU-X performed like this was its natural habitat, without drinking heavily at all. Fuel economy reached around 8.0 L/100 km without people in the back seats, heavy luggage, or any load.
We engaged 4H (there was no need to switch to low-range) and proceeded to descend a steep and twisty downhill section with the assistance of the hill-descent control system, which worked like a charm.
We also tested the Onyx XT's adaptive cruise control (which proved very effective) and lane-keep assistance. Strangely, the lane-keep assist would sometimes disengage without warning; then we realised it only recognises and responds to the solid lines. It's not Volvo's Pilot Assist system, but it's better than before.
Pricing
The expanded 2025 ISUZU MU-X range is priced as follows:
• 1.9 Ddi MU-X LS 4x2 A/T: R752 300
• 3.0 Ddi MU-X LS 4x2 A/T: R852 600
• 3.0 Ddi MU-X LS 4x4 A/T: R939 500
• 3.0 Ddi MU-X LSE 4x2 A/T: R886 700
• 3.0 Ddi MU-X LSE 4x4 A/T: R973 700
• 3.0 Ddi MU-X ONYX XT 4x4 A/T: R1 026 800
Yes, over a million seems a bit much for the top-spec model, but this is what large, seven-seater Japanese SUVs cost these days, sadly.
The mu-X gets a comprehensive 5-year/90 000km service plan and 5-year/120 000km warranty.

Should you consider the MU-X?
Isuzu's enhanced MU-X offers an attractive combination of proven durability, legitimate off-road capability, and a more sophisticated package inside and out.
It has always appealed to buyers prioritising substance over flash, but this refresh adds enough style and tech to widen its appeal.
