Volkswagen Polo Buyer's Guide (2010-2017)

A highly popular choice and a notable highlight of the Polo name. The MK5 generation was a remarkable success and a popular sight on South African roads. Are you considering buying one? Well, here's all the information you'll ever need.

Volkswagen's Mk5/6R/6C Polo was a runaway success, to put it lightly. It provided affordable transportation that was stylish, frugal and as a result, ended up in many driveways. Perhaps you're thinking of buying such a vehicle, and you're not entirely sure of where to start with the myriad of variants and powertrains available. No need to stress, though. This guide is for you. We'll break down all the details and help you find your future Polo. We will exclude the GTI and Polo Vivo from here as they warrant their own separate articles. We'll include the Polo sedan here as well because, mechanically, they're the same as the hatchback, albeit with some noticeable cosmetic differences.

The Polo in South Africa had a production run from 2010 to 2017 and continued its life beyond that as the second-generation Polo Vivo. The model code for the pre-facelift is 6R, while the facelift is dubbed 6C. The public typically refers to this generation as the 'Mark 5'. We'll focus on the mainline Polo for this article. There was a midlife facelift, which we'll also touch on. In addition to the hatchbacks, a sedan version of this Polo was also offered.

Original 2010 - 2014

  • Trendline - This serves as the entry-level variant to the Polo range. These came equipped with either a 1.4-litre or 1.6-litre petrol engine and were paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. This also applied to the Polo sedan.
  • Comfortline - This is the mid-spec model with some features added on. These came further equipped, in addition to what's found on the Trendline. An optional 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine was available, and you could also get a Tiptronic automatic transmission. This also applied to the Polo sedan.
  • Bluemotion - A very frugal alternative with not only aerodynamic exterior additions, but this came equipped with a peculiar powertrain in the form of a 1.2-litre turbodiesel 3-cylinder and 5-speed manual.
  • Cross Polo - The more adventurous version, complete with body cladding and lifted suspension. This came equipped with a 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine and a 5-speed manual transmission.

Facelift 2014-2017

  • Trendline - This comes with a 1.2-litre TSI 3-cylinder petrol engine or a 1.4-litre turbodiesel 3-cylinder diesel engine, but still retains the 5-speed manual transmission. The naturally aspirated engines from the pre-facelift range were homed in the sedan variants.
  • Comfortline - These now come equipped with a 1.2-litre TSI 4-cylinder petrol engine too. However, the sedan variants retained the naturally aspirated engines, and a 1.5-litre turbodiesel variant was also available.
  • Highline - This serves as the full house model and comes with the 1.2 TSI 4-cylinder petrol engine. You can also spec this with Volkswagen's DSG dual clutch automatic transmission.
  • Bluemotion - The Bluemotion retains the fuel efficiency-focused aerodynamics but swaps the diesel engine for a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine.
  • Cross Polo - The Cross Polo still has go anywhere aesthetics but has a smaller 1.4-litre turbodiesel 3-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual. You can also opt for the Cross Polo with the 1.2-litre TSI engine.

Special Editions

Beats - This was a result of a collaboration between BeatsAudio from the USA to make this special edition vehicle complete with a Beats Premium Sound System. The base is a 1.2 TSI facelift Polo with features from various Polo variants, both inside and out.

R-Line - This is a facelift 1.0 TSI Polo featuring a sporty aesthetics package inside and out.

Cross Polo Urban Ice - Serves as an aesthetic package for the Cross Polo.

Engine Descriptions, Strengths and Weaknesses 

The Polo used engines from the EA (Entwicklungsauftrag or Development Assignment) series and dates back to the 1970s. Of course, they have been developed and improved over time, utilising the latest bleeding-edge engine technology. Nowadays, these are garden-variety Volkswagen engines, so they're almost everywhere.

How can you check what engine the Polo you want has? It's easy. The engine itself typically has the code stamped directly onto it. Some locations include: near the oil filter housing, near the transmission housing, in front of the engine block or cylinder head. If the car in question has a service book or log book, you'll find the engine code there; it's either a 4-letter or 3-letter code that we'll use in this article. There may also be a code plaque in the boot, located under the carpet, generally near the spare tyre.


EA111 - Naturally Aspirated Petrol Engines

The 1.4 and 1.6 naturally aspirated engines featured here were originally found in the pre-facelift Polo hatchbacks and also appeared in the long line of Polo sedans. However, they have since been discontinued in the Polo hatchback line, except in the Polo Vivo, which is a different article that we will explore in more detail at a later time. 

1.4-litre CGGB

This is the 1.4-litre engine making 63 kW / 132 Nm. A cast aluminium alloy block uses a timing belt.

Strengths

These are simple engines designed to be dependable, robust, and fuel-efficient, too. Their lifespan is rated to about 250 000km if appropriately maintained. Claimed fuel economy is rated at 5.9 L /100km. They're also claimed to be reasonably reliable, too.

Weaknesses

There have been reports of ignition coil failure. Rough idle/Poor performance due to dirty throttle bodies or a clogged EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. The timing belts need replacing every 90 000 km, and if they fail, then it will result in bent valves requiring engine head work, which is expensive.

1.6-Litre CFNA

One of the 1.6-litre engines making 77 kW / 153 Nm. An aluminium engine block typically features a timing chain. 

Strengths

This is similar to the above 1.4-litre engine, but with a larger displacement and increased power and torque. There's also a timing chain in place of the belt set-up in the 1.4-litre model.

Weaknesses

There have been reports of knocking pistons, which should be replaced under warranty. Reports also indicate that the exhaust system hasn't been entirely reliable and requires an updated part under warranty. There are also reports of timing chain issues, so please don't treat this as an item that will last the entire lifespan of the vehicle; rather, have it checked regularly and replaced if needed.

EA Series TSI Engines

These engines still fall under the EA111 and EA211 series, respectively, but utilise turbocharging and direct injection. They are newer engines.

1.2 TSI CBZB 

In use from 2010 to 2014 on pre-facelift Highline models, this is a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol turbo engine producing 77 kW / 175 Nm. It's a chain-driven engine.

Strengths 

This is a rather peppy engine, but it maintains its frugality with a claimed fuel consumption of 5.7 L/100 km.

Weaknesses

The timing chain is this engine's weak point, with stretching reported at around the 100 000 km mark. The turbocharger's actuator and wastegates can fail, resulting in an EPC light appearing and a loss of power.


1.2 TSI CJZC and CJZD

CJZC (in use from 2014-2017 facelift Trendline & Comfortline models) - A 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol turbo engine making 66 kW / 160 Nm. This is a belt-driven engine.

CJZD (In use from 2014 - 2017 Used in the Highline models) - A 1.2-litre  4-cylinder petrol turbo engine making 81 kW / 175 Nm. This engine is belt driven.

Strengths

Like the above CBZB, the CJZ engine family is also quite efficient and peppy with a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100km.

Weaknesses

Despite moving to a timing belt rather than a chain, this engine has suffered in other areas, such as increased oil consumption, carbon build-up on the intake valves, the turbo actuator failing and after around 100 000 km, reports of oil pump failure and leaking thermostats.


1.0 TSI CHZB and CHZD

CHZB (In use from 2015 - 2017 in the Bluemotion models) - A 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol turbo engine making 70 kW / 160 Nm.  This engine is belt-driven.

CHZD (In use from 2015 -2017 in the R-Line models) - A 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol turbo engine making 81 kW / 200 Nm. This engine is belt-driven.

Strengths

Have we not discussed efficiency enough with these engines? The CHZ family dials it all in further with the lower end of 4.0 L /100km but not compromising with strained performance.

Weaknesses

Unfortunately, the CHZ engine family suffers from reported oil pump issues after 80 000 km. Turbocharger actuator issues have also been noted. Carbon buildup on the intake valves, resulting from direct injection, has been observed.

EA189 Series Diesel Engines

The diesel engines were predominantly used in the pre-facelift Polo. Still, most were excluded from many variants of the facelift version of the Polo except the 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre units.


1.6-litre CAYC

Used in Polo hatch and sedan Trendline, Comfortline and Cross Polo models- This a 1.6-litre TDI 4 cylinder diesel engine making 77 kW / 250 Nm. This has a cast-iron block and is belt-driven.

Strengths

This is the garden-variety diesel engine when it comes to the early Mk5 Polo range. This is one of the most robust diesel engines from Volkswagen. It's also a performer and frugal with a claimed 4.1 L/100km fuel consumption.

Weaknesses

This engine is sensitive to bad-quality fuel, which can result in reports of injector failure. If the timing belt fails, there will be bent valves. The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) can clog up with short, frequent trips, which can result in warning lights and the engine entering limp mode. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) can leak coolant internally and clog with soot. Only after about 250 000 km does the high-pressure fuel pump start to show signs of wear.


1.2-litre CFWA

(Used in the Bluemotion model) - This is a 1.2-litre TDI 3-cylinder diesel engine making 55 kW / 180 Nm. This has a cast-iron block and is belt-driven.

Strengths

This engine is extremely compact and lightweight, making it perfect for the ultimate frugal Polo, the Bluemotion model. 

Weaknesses

This engine also prefers high-quality diesel. There have been reported DPF and EGR clogging issues as well as injector failure. Due to being belt-driven, if the timing belt is not changed on time, it can result in catastrophic engine failure.

1.4-litre - ATL

(Used in the Cross Polo and Highline models) - This is a 1.4-litre TDI 3-cylinder diesel engine making 77 kW / 250 Nm. This has a cast-iron block and is belt-driven.

Strengths 

It can be seen as a successor to the 1.6-litre turbodiesel unit. Another win for the frugality train but with some added punch.

Weaknesses

They suffer from many of the same issues as the above engines. Namely, DPF and EGR clogging, injector failure, timing belt failure if not replaced on time, and a preference for high-quality fuel.


1.5-litre CWXC

(Used in the Polo sedan models) - This is a 1.5-litre TDI 4-cylinder diesel engine making 81 kW / 250 Nm. This has a cast-iron block and is belt-driven.

We haven't found concrete information about this engine's weaknesses. Still, considering it's part of the EA189 engine family, it's safe to assume that it follows the tendencies of the aforementioned diesel engines.

Transmissions

DQ200 - 7-Speed dry dual clutch transmission

One of Volkswagen's famous transmissions. Known for quick shifts and laden with technology. They're typically found in the Highline models as well as the R-Line models here.

Unfortunately, these transmissions are known for their susceptibility to Mechatronic Unit Failure, which results in the transmission's computer failing and the development of electrical faults. A symptom of such is the flashing EPC warning light and 'PRNDS' drive gears flashing in the instrument cluster, inability to select reverse and slipping into neutral, indicating that the vehicle has gone into protection mode. Shuddering can occur due to wear on the clutch pack.

These units can be repaired, but it is a costly job.

5 and 6-speed Manual Transmissions

These row your own gearboxes are quite robust as a whole, with the only common issues noted being input shaft bearing failure, leading to difficulty in selecting gears.

Tiptronic Automatic Transmission

These are found in the pre-facelift Polos and are found in the Polo sedans. They are pretty robust transmissions, but reports have indicated that they can be jerky and shudder if the transmission control module has not received the latest software updates.

Overall, the gearbox mounts on these vehicles haven't been as robust.

Suspension Notes

Generally, the suspension on this generation of Polo is considered robust. The only thing to note here is that the pre-facelift models were affected by faulty hydraulic power steering pumps. The facelift models utilised electronic power steering, which mitigates the above issue.

Exterior and Interior Information

This generation of Polo has been regarded as well-built. The standard of quality, both inside and out, has been highly regarded. Though it is not without fault, here's what you need to take note of from these reports:

  • Faulty Door locks due to actuator, lock switch or key fob failures.
  • Electric windows - this can be due to switches failing and the windows getting stuck in their channels, leading to worn window motors if the runners haven't been lubricated regularly. Faulty regulators are a thing.
  • Windscreen washer jet pipes can fail, but are often covered by warranty.
  • Faulty HVAC blower motors.
  • Airbag troubles - There have been reported airbag faults which warranties have covered.
  • Reports of infotainment system faults on the 6C facelift models.
  • Check for damaged boot locks

Spare Parts Availability and Servicing

Many of the Polo's mechanical parts are shared amongst its cousins in the VAG group, so internationally, there's a plethora of spare parts in that regard. Exterior and interior parts are pretty common. In South Africa, thanks to the massive market share the Mark 5 Polo had, it would be surprising to hear that one could not find a spare part. Whether you opt for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), high-quality aftermarket parts, or even a scrapyard if you want to save some Money, the parts availability as a whole at the time of writing this article is exceptional and relatively affordable, depending on the job that needs to be done on a Polo.

Regarding servicing, you can visit either a dealership or a multitude of Volkswagen specialists. Routine servicing for the Polo range is affordable relative to other cars in its range. These are commuter cars so they don't need to be expensive to sort routinely. 

However, with the aforementioned issues with the engines, be sure to budget for more expensive repairs if you need a timing chain/belt, turbocharger, DPF/EGR, as these are labour-intensive and the parts can be costly.

The 1.2 TSI / DSG-equipped Polos can be costly to maintain.

With body panels and trims, they're fairly easy to find, but OEM quality will set you back quite a bit of money. Good aftermarket parts are also available at a lower price.

Volkswagen Polo Test Drive Checklist

The usual pre-purchase test drive checklists apply here, but what notable items should be checked?

High Priority

  • 1.2 TSI Engines - Listen to how the engine sounds upon a cold start-up. If you hear a metallic ticking sound, it may indicate that a timing chain replacement is needed.
  • TDI engines - Check for idle smoothness and query the vehicle's injector, DPF and EGR history.
  • Naturally aspirated engines - Listen for metallic clicking upon a cold start; it could mean the timing chain is tired and due for replacement.
  • Vehicles equipped with DSG - Test all the gears, pay attention to jerking when starting and shifting
  • Pre-facelift Power steering for smooth and non-noisy operation.
  • Airbag recall history.
  • All models - Warranty repairs, mechanical history.

Lower priority

  • Window operation
  • Boot lock
  • Air conditioning and HVAC controls
  • Infotainment system on facelift models

If available, have someone with a computer diagnostics machine check for any error codes. Particularly, codes relating to the DSG transmission, EGR and DPF.

General Car Buying Advice 

Tyres: Ensure the tyres are from a reputable brand, as this is often a sign of how well a car is maintained. If the owner/dealer cut corners by purchasing cheap tyres for a performance or off-road vehicle, that should ring alarm bells as to where else did they cut corners?

Modifications: A modified car poses a significantly greater risk than a used car purchase compared to a standard model. A person who modifies their performance vehicle generally drives their car more aggressively, creating a higher risk of potential issues. The Polo is notorious for modifications, so please be careful of any history relating to that.


Service history: The Polo will provide you with many years of reliable service, provided it has been serviced regularly with high-quality oil and genuine parts. It's best to make sure the vehicle has a full service history.


Accident damage: Inspect the paint and check key welding points under the bonnet and the vehicle's boot to ensure the car has not been in a significant accident. The Polos do tend to be lowered, so be sure to check the frame rails for damage. Some spray work on the front and rear bumpers is standard, as dings and rock chipping are minor in the grand scheme of things. However, if the vehicle's structure has been damaged, it's best to walk away.

Our verdict, our ultimate pick

Our pick would be the 1.6-litre turbodiesel for the pre-facelift era, and the 1.4-litre turbodiesel Highline for the facelift era. How come? It can't be denied that the turbodiesel Polos provide an outstanding balance of performance and frugality. If this Buyer's Guide has proven anything, it's that they're the more robust options when looking at the range as a whole. If diesel isn't your thing, then the naturally aspirated 1.4-litre petrol pre-facelift variants are king, and this goes for the sedan variants as well. 

Regarding transmission choices, we recommend either the Tiptronic or the row-your-own manual transmission.

These do have high mileage on them, but international reports have shown they can go on forever with proper maintenance.

Final Tip: A well-documented service history is paramount, and ensuring that the major service items have been performed will ensure fuss-free kilometres. Preferably go for untouched examples rather than modified ones.
