The Nissan Juke received its last updates back in 2015 and is no longer being sold new in SA. If you’re purchasing a Juke on the used car market, here’s what you need to know about the last updated engines.
In 2015, the Juke was offered with forced induction and direct injection across its entire engine range. The range of engines was said to offer great drivability and engine responsiveness.
Petrol Engines
Having first debuted on the Nissan Qashqai, the 1.2 DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline - Turbo) engine replaced the normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine that powered the previous entry-level Juke models. This engine features a
The 1.2 DIG-T engine features a turbo and intercooler and offers 85 kW at 4 500 r/min and 190 Nm of torque in a completely flat band from 2 000 r/min to 4 000 r/min. Compared to the engine it replaced, the newer 1.2 DIG-T allows its drivers a near 30% of the engine range back to play with under full power delivery.
The newer engine further offers an added benefit of improved fuel consumption of 5.6 litres/100 km, a figure made possible by the standard fitment of Stop/Start technology.
The second petrol engine in the 2015 model range was the highly popular 1.6 DIG-T. Equipped with the same technology as the 1.2 DIG-T, such as an intercooler, Start/Stop technology and direct petrol injection. It puts out maximum power of 140 kW at 5 600 r/min and maximum torque of 240 Nm in a wide band between 1 600 and 5 200 r/min on tap. This engine propels you from 0 – 100 km/h in 8.0 seconds and uses 6.9 litres of fuel in a combined driving cycle.
Diesel Engine
The last of the turbo-charged engines in the Nissan Juke was the equally popular 1.5 dCi turbo diesel engine. It is also fitted with an intercooler and has common rail direct injection to offer maximum torque of 260 Nm between 1 750 and 2 500 r/min and maximum power of 81 kW at 4 000 r/min. The 1.5 dCi Juke accelerates from 0 – 100 km/h in 11.2 seconds and only sips an impressive 4.2 litres of diesel in a combined driving cycle.
Transmission
The aforementioned engines were mated to either a direct-shifting six-speed gearbox or Nissan’s XTronic constantly variable transmission (CVT), depending on the model and engine choice. The XTronic gearbox was upgraded to offer 17% greater ratio speed and 40% less internal friction, ideal for traffic-weary city dwellers.
Verdict
We always tell our shoppers that we can’t tell you whether a petrol or diesel engine is the better one for you. Most times personal preference usually precede reason but usage and driving behaviour are also strong determining factors among which it differs from driver to driver. So here are some things to consider when deciding on which engine is best for you:
Diesel engines outperform petrol ones on their CO2 emissions but emit high levels of both Nitrogen Oxides and sooty particulates. And it's these emissions that are detrimental to human health of which the effects are especially prevalent in major cities. It's also popular knowledge that these vehicle emissions pose a serious threat to the natural world due to their contribution to global warming.
On a different note, diesel engines are generally low rev and high torque and provide a lot of thrust from the offset which suits vehicles that tackle difficult terrain, tow heavy loads and/or for drivers who require comfort on long motorway journeys. High-distance drivers benefit from a diesel engine over a petrol one and are usually advised to choose a diesel vehicle due to cost savings at the pump.
Petrol engines are more commonly recognised for its instant throttle response and are more suited for short journeys and city driving.
