As BMW's most attainable model, the Leipzig-built 1 Series is incredibly important for the German brand. As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the brand's compact model, BMW recently pulled the covers off of an updated version of the 1 Series, and here's what you need to know!

What's new?
In what may sound like a relatively inconsequential move, BMW has removed the "i" suffix from the rear end of the 1 Series, with models now being badged 118, 120 or M135 xDrive. Visually, the car's front end is completely revised, with new LED headlights, a new front bumper design, and an updated kidney grille. The rear end has also been updated with new lights, a reshaped bumper, and a new diffuser in the M Sport models.
Inside, the brand has included the infotainment and instrument cluster from the X1, meaning there's a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen housed within the same panel. These now run on BMW’s iDrive 9 operating system.
Drivetrains
BMW has added mild hybrid technology to the range. The flagship M35 xDrive now features a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, replacing the eight-speed in the old model. The product produces 233kW and 400Nm of torque, some 8kW more but 50Nm less than the outgoing model. BMW SA has confirmed that the M35 and 118 will make it to local shores, with the 120 joining at a later stage. A turbocharged 1.5-litre engine powers the latter 120 but with an electric motor attached to the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The 120 produces 115kW and 240Nm without hybrid power and 125kW/280Nm with electrical assistance. We envision that the 118 will get the updated 115kW and 240Nm output but will do without the 48-volt assistance.
Dimensions
The length has been increased by 42 mm to 4 361 mm, while the wheelbase and width remain at 2 670mm and 1 800mm, respectively. It is now 25 mm taller at 1 459 mm.
Paint Options
There are two solid paint finishes, seven metallic finishes, four BMW Individual paint finishes, and a wide range of BMW Individual special paint finishes. Customers can also opt for a contrasting roof paint finish in high-gloss black.
Local introduction
Expect the new model to be launched locally in the fourth quarter of 2024.
