There's officially an electrified version of the best-selling vehicle in SA, and the best-selling seven-seater in SA too, as Toyota lists both the Hilux and Fortuner for sale with 48V mild hybrid systems.
Only 2.8 models
Amid increasing legislative pressure to progress towards carbon neutrality, Toyota has introduced the 48V versions of the Hilux and Fortuner, which are only available in the 2.8 model models, and in the case of the Hilux, only in the double cab models.
Introduction of 48V tech
The popular 2.8 litre diesel engine in the bakkie and SUV now benefits from a hybrid 48-Volt system. The system works with the engine driving a compact motor generator using a belt, which charges a 7.6 kg 48V lithium battery located under the rear seats. The battery is charged under deceleration, utilising regenerative braking while assisting with braking. The system also powers the 12V power source through a DC/DC converter. The battery can provide 12kW and 65Nm of torque, providing better acceleration, a more linear power delivery, and better fuel efficiency. Toyota claims a 5% fuel efficiency improvement, which we'll explore in an upcoming evaluation.
The brand claims that the drivetrain is now smoother with the inclusion of this technology, with an improved throttle response and a quieter engine start procedure without the need for a traditional starter motor. The idle speed has also been reduced to 600 r/min from 720 r/min, which is said to be beneficial during off-road driving scenarios. There is still 700mm of wading depth as the battery and DC-DC converter have been made waterproof.
