Toyota Cruiser engine options explained
The Cruiser nameplate has recently been expanded to include Toyota's budget-oriented SUV namely the Urban Cruiser, while the Land Cruiser badge is reserved for the automaker's more distinguished off-roaders. We look at the different Cruiser engines in the local line-up.
Rough and Tumble
Toyota has made a name for themselves when it comes to rough, ready and reliable cars that often times outlast their environments. Nothing in their lineup represents these qualities better than their Cruiser derivatives. ranging from city bound crossovers all the way through to terrain pounding luxury over-landing machines, the Cruiser nameplate means business.

Urban Cruiser
The entire Urban Cruiser range is powered by a 1.5l 4 cylinder petrol engine. The engine puts out 77kW and 138Nm and has claimed combined cycle consumption figures of 6.2l per 100km
Land Cruiser Prado
The Land Cruiser Prado comes with two engine options, the global 2.8 GD-6 diesel and the 4.0l V6 petrol. the 2.8 GD-6 outputs 150kW and 500Nm, consuming 7.9l / 100km while the V6 outputs 202kW and 381Nm with claimed fuel consumption figures of 11.3l / 100km
Land Cruiser 70 series
The 70 series Land. Cruiser comprises three models, the 76, 78 and 79 derivatives. Within these three model ranges you have the options of a 4.5 D4D V8 that delivers 151kW and 420Nm gulping down 11.9l / 100km of fuel. There is also a 4.2D inline 6 cylinder diesel that puts out 96kW and 285Nm, using 11.9l / 100km and 4.0 V6 that churns out 170kW and 360 Nm.
Land Cruiser 200
The 200 series is no longer sold as new in South Africa but if you find a second hand model you will get a 4.5l V8 turbo diesel that pumps out 165kW and 650Nm burning 13.6l / 100km of fuel on the combined cycle.
Land Cruiser 300
The replacement for the 200 series is the ultra luxurious and imposing 300 series and here you will have the choice of either the 3.3D V6 turbo diesel that pumps out 225kW and 700Nm but sips fuel at 8.9l /100km or the fantastic 3.5l turbo V6 petrol derivative that whips up 305kW and 650Nm and chugs 12.1l /100km of pump gas for its efforts.
