Topping up the screen wash bottle on an Audi RS4 Avant

Opening the bonnet of the Audi RS4 Avant is a special occasion. After you’ve gazed at that beautiful engine, you might also like to top up the windscreen washer bottle.

Automotive News

The Audi RS4 Avant is the top-of-the range model in the A4 range at present. What’s more the famous RS badge is only affixed to one model in the A4 range, and that is the elegant, but oh-so-practical Avant.

In Europe wagons are often seen to have more street-cred than ordinary sedans amongst petrol-heads, although sadly this isn’t the case here, where more-cumbersome SUVs rule the roost. However,  hats-off to   Audi for continuing to offer this super-wagon on our market!

The RS4 Avant enjoys a 331 kW Sunday-punch!

The RS4 Avant uses an extremely potent 331 kW V6 engine for motivation. What’s more, the engine compartment is crammed to the hilt with technology and a beautiful  bright-metal engine shroud, engendering even more appreciation for this serious performance-wagon.

Most DIY jobs today are off limits!

Given today’s era of extended warranties and maintenance plans that accompany cars of this level, virtually all maintenance tasks are stipulated by the warranty to be left to the dealership.

One of the few DIY jobs you can do without affecting the warranty  is to top up the windscreen washer bottle. Funny thing is, you may battle to locate it at your first attempt.

Step-by-step top-up

1.Open the bonnet by operating the correct lever in the cabin. If you don’t know where this is, consult the owner’s handbook. After you’ve activated the secondary release catch and lifted the bonnet,  it will stay open, as it rests on hydraulic struts.

2.To locate the windscreen washer bottle, look for a blue cap. In the Audi range, a blue cap in the engine bay always indicates the windscreen washer bottle.

3.You will find the washer bottle cap only after a little searching. This is because ( when viewed from the front of the car), it is located at the very far-left-hand  end of the engine bay, in a recess behind the left  bonnet hinge.

4.The cap itself is plastic and you can open it by hand without any tools. Simply lift up the tab on the one end, and the cap will flip open and stay in place, as it is hinged.

5.Use a handy 500 ml water bottle to top up with normal tap water. You can use a special screen wash fluid obtainable from a spares shop, but it is not necessary.

6.Fill very slowly until you see the level rise to just below the protective mesh on the bottle neck.

7.Close the cap firmly, checking it is snug,  and close the bonnet.

8.Check that the screen wash works properly by activating the wiper stalk inside the car. If all is well, you are done!
