Top 5 reasons why you should save up for the new Ford Ranger FX4
The Ford Ranger FX launched to the media at the wild coast this week. After spending two days navigating the spectacular jungle and coastal scenery in the ultra-comfy and capable Ranger FX4, I once again realized why the Ranger keeps giving the Hilux such a run for its money. Here's why the new Ranger XLT-based FX4 will satisfy your lifestyle needs, all while looking the part.
1. It looks like a Ford Ranger Thunder, but costs significantly less
The Ranger Thunder is one of the best-looking new bakkies on our roads, and the more-affordable FX4 has many of the same styling cues and on-board equipment. The mesh grille shape and design are the same; but without the red accents. Black door handles and mirrors, blacked-out 18-inch alloys and red FX4 badging set it apart from the rest of the bunch. Other practical styling features in the FX4 include an extended tubular sports bar and a drop-in bedliner with a 12-Volt power socket. (See pricing at the bottom of this article.)
2. It's fitted with the new FordPass Connect system
You can now control an array of features remotely with the new FordPass app. Prior to the launch, we all downloaded the FordPass app onto our smartphones. Once we arrived at the venue, I paired my designated vehicle with the phone via the QR code for the VIN number. This allowed me access to a range of connected functions, including the ability to start and stop the Ranger remotely, and to check the fuel range and the vehicle's oil percentage, as well as the Ranger’s location, to name but a few of its features. This works via the 4G modem inside the vehicle. From 2021, it’s available on XL models and higher up in the Ranger pecking order.

3. Top-notch infotainment
It’s not limited to the FX4 model, of course, but over the two days spent inside the vehicle, we appreciated Ford’s user-friendly SYNC3 system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Teamed with good ergonomics, a logically laid-out dashboard and well-placed steering wheel buttons, it becomes second nature to switch from one source to another or to get Siri or Alexa to quickly compose a WhatsApp or read out an email to you while you’re on the go. The sound system is very decent and as we worked our way through various playlists from the19 70s to the 2000s, we all agreed that the Ranger's sound insulation proved to be very effective as well. (The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is remarkably refined and runs so quietly it doesn't even sound like a diesel!)
4. It feels more car-like to drive than many of its competitors
The Ford Ranger has always enjoyed a good reputation for how it handles and general drivability. On our journey through the Eastern Cape, the terrain we crossed included twisty tar roads, rough gravel, slippery mud and grass, soft sand, and mountainous sections with steep uphills and a healthy amount of dongas thrown in. Steering is light and easy, but not over-assisted, so piloting the Ranger is a fuss-free affair and one doesn’t need to constantly make adjustments to the steering wheel while one drives. The 10-speed auto gearbox keeps the Ranger in its ideal rev range and there’s never any hesitation or hunting for the correct gear. The 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel-engine has 132 kW and 420Nm of torque.
"The Ranger FX4 can be specified in 4x2 or 4x4 models, both of which are equipped with an electronic differential lock as standard. The 4x4 derivative gains shift-on-the-fly engagement of the four-wheel drive system, along with Hill Descent Control", says Ford SA.
5. It offers plenty of value for money-savvy adventure seekers
Considering all the features you're getting for your money, the Ford Ranger FX4 is a good value proposition, especially if you like your bakkie to stand out, and you intend on using it as your family's daily driver and weekend lifestyle vehicle. 6 airbags plus a driver's knee-bag keep every occupant safe. Other safety features include Electronic Stability Programme with Traction Control, Hill Launch Assist, Roll-over Mitigation, Adaptive Load Control, Trailer Sway Control and ABS brakes (with Electronic Brake-force Distribution) and Emergency Brake Assist.
Other standard features include a tow-bar, LED driving lights, side steps, an easy-lift tailgate, dual electronic climate control, parking sensors in the front and rear, a rearview camera, and a 4-year, 120 000 km warranty with 3 years of roadside assistance.
