Formerly known as the ML, the GLE range of SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG can trace their roots back to the 90s, where the ML made its debut. From an AMG perspective, the 1999 ML 55 AMG is considered one of the original performance SUVs, giving rise to an impressive portfolio of performance SUVs within the brand’s current line-up. The latest additions to this range are the GLE 53 4Matic+ and GLE 4Matic+ Coupe. Here are 3 things that you need to know about these newcomers.
1.Impressive powertrain
While many consider a V8 engine as an AMG staple, the six-cylinder AMG models have proven themselves as competent performers whether badged 43 or 53. The latter nomenclature has been added to the GLE lineup, meaning that the model gains a turbocharged straight-six with a 48-volt electrical system called EQ Boost.
The result is 320kW and 520Nm of torque from the combustion engine while the 48-volt system provides an additional 16kW and 250Nm of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Performance is impressive, with both variants sprinting to 100km/h in a claimed 5.3 seconds while consuming fuel at a rate of 9.3L/100km.
2.Safety
The GLE range was tested by the Euro NCAP programme in 2019 where it achieved the maximum 5-star rating, including 91% for adult occupant safety, 90% for child occupant safety, 78% for pedestrian safety and 78% for its safety assist systems.
3.Standard kit
The GLE 53 and GLE 53 Coupe models both come with a raft of standard features, including the AMG Performance steering wheel, AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System) that includes driving modes such as Comfort, Sport, Sport+ as well as a Trail and Sand setting. Other standard features include 20-inch alloy wheels, the brand’s latest MBUX infotainment system and digitised instrument cluster, electric front seats and surround-view cameras for parking, to name a few.
