Automotive News

The world is an ever evolving space in which trends are catered for by those offering products and services. Automakers are no different, providing those with the means to afford personal mobility with a variety of vehicle types to suit their personal lifestyles and tastes. As the trend of producing more environmentally friendly vehicle increases, items such as 'vegan' interiors, which are basically leather and other animal product-free spaces are becoming more popular. We have compiled a lift of ten vehicles and brand brands that offer vegan interior options in their vehicles. Despite leather being associated with luxury, many of the brands featured on our list are premium automakers. Ironically, most entry-level vehicles have featured vinyl-clad or cloth-covered interior trim components for decades, making them vegan before it was cool. The list has been compiled in alphabetical order, so do not consider this a ranking system.

1. Audi

The Ingolstadt-based brand is renowned for its interiors, which offer high quality, pleasing aesthetics and great ergonomics. Since many of its premium products have featured leather throughout most of the interior, the brand decided to offer those who are after an animal product-free space with an option in products such as the e-Tron GT quattro which offers both Dinamica and leatherette(a synthetic leather) as well as a fabric and leatherette option for these models.

2. BMW

Bavaria's own automaker has offered what is called Sensatec upholstery in many of its models throughout the years. The material is produced to look and feel like real leather but is synthetic and is said to be both durable and inexpensive.

4. Lexus/Toyota

Auto giant Toyota and its premium sub-brand Lexus both offer synthetic leather upholstery in various models, mostly in the lower end of the model ranges.

5. Land Rover

Purveyor of both premium and capable off-road machines, Land Rover straddles the line between a curb-hopping SUV brand and being one of the ultimate adventure off-roader producers. When visiting the brand's local configurator, we found a leather-free interior options on model such as the Land Rover Evoque and Velar,  to name a few. The option is called 'premium textile with suedecloth' and was a R13 600 option at the time of writing.

5. Mercedes-Benz

Like its BMW and Audi counterparts, Mercedes-Benz too offers artificial leather options in its interiors. This product is called Artico man-made leather and is available in conjunction with Dinamica microfibre in various models.

6. Mini

As one of the most customisable and indeed, quirky brands on the market, Mini offers its more basic models with synthetic leathers and cloth upholstery.

7.Porsche

As Porsche looks to expand its all-electric product portfolio, it makes sense that its Taycan EV is available with a microfibre interior trim option for those looking for an EV with a vegan interior option.

8.Renault

Most of Renault's local line-up is devoid of any leather inside unless the buyer specifies it as an option, making it  an option for those looking for a budget-friendly vegan interior.

9. Volkswagen

Since Volkswagen product both budget-friendly and premium products, it is relatively easy to find a vegan interior option. We configured a base model of the recently updated Polo and found that it cones with Titanium Black cloth covered seats and no leather trim on the steering wheel.

10.Volvo

Volvo has committed to many things over the course of the next decade, chief of which is to switch to an all-electric vehicle line-up, but it has also said all of its products will be animal product-free by 2023. The catalyst for this is the SA-bound C40 crossover which features a full vegan interior.
