A homologation example of the new Kia Carens, confirmed by Kia South Africa, has been spotted undergoing road tests, signalling its imminent arrival in the second half of 2026. This marks a significant return and re-imagining for the Carens nameplate, transitioning from its traditional MPV roots into a more SUV-like product.

From MPV to RV
The previous generations of the Kia Carens were known globally as reliable and practical MPVs. However, this latest iteration, internally codenamed KY, takes a bold leap. Kia has officially dubbed it an "RV" – a Recreational Vehicle – blending the spaciousness and practicality of an MPV with the appeal and styling cues of an SUV.
This strategic shift is likely to resonate well in the South African market, where SUVs and crossover-style vehicles continue to dominate sales charts due to their perceived versatility, ground clearance, and commanding driving position. The new Carens aims to offer the best of both worlds: the high seating capacity and family-friendly cabin of an MPV, combined with the desirability and contemporary aesthetics of an SUV.
Design
Drawing inspiration from Kia's "Opposites United" design language, the new Carens boasts a sophisticated and modern aesthetic. Key design elements expected to make it to our shores include:
A prominent tiger-nose grille (reimagined for the new Kia era) flanked by LED daytime running lights.
The "Star Map" LED taillights, as seen on the spotted vehicle, create a unique and recognisable signature.
SUV-inspired cladding, roof rails, and a higher ground clearance will contribute to its "RV" appeal.
Interior
The Carens is a 7-seater, making it a natural rival for products such as the Toyota Rumion/Suzuki Ertiga twins as well as the Mitsubishi Xpander.
