XC40 Recharge
The all-electric XC40 will appear similar to a petrol-powered XC40 as this product was designed with full electrification in mind from the get-go. In place of an internal combustion engine is a large battery pack with twin electric motors that produces 300kW and 660Nm of torque. This allows for a 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds and a claimed 418 km of range on a single charge.
The latest model can only be ordered online via the Swedish brand’s local website with no additional options available aside from the choice of eight exterior colours. The brand has also confirmed that a black interior colour is the only option for what is sure to be a low-volume product for the time being.
What is included in the price?
The list price of the XC40 Recharge includes what the brand calls a Care package, which includes a traditional 5-year maintenance plan and warranty but also an 8-year/160 000km warranty on the battery pack, which should maintain at least 80% of its capacity up until the 8-year mark.
The brand has also included three years’ worth of insurance, the use of a petrol-powered XC40 for two weeks per year for the first three years of ownership. This has been introduced to eliminate range anxiety over extended trips. Volvo has also included the free installation of a home charging station which will be fitted before the client takes delivery of their product from September 2021 onward.
“All-electric vehicles sold in South Africa have traditionally come with hefty price tags – and this has undoubtedly been a deterrent. We know that there is an appetite in South Africa for electric cars and we were determined to give customers an attractive price,” says Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa.
