The inaugural Elite World Cup for electric hypercars was unveiled in Johannesburg on Monday, 21 August. This racing championship ushers in the collaboration of two emerging countries, South Africa and China, uniting to present a motorsport series.
The reveal occurred a few hours before the BRICS Summit at Sandton Square in Johannesburg, where series founders Tokyo Sexwale, Liu Yu, and Stephen Watson shared their plan to launch the world's first electric hypercar World Cup in September 2024.
A word from the founders
Tokyo Sexwale, Co-founder of the Elite World Cup, said, "The Elite World Cup is more than just a racing competition; it embodies the potential of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability."
"The name 'Elite' was chosen for a reason - our intention is to engage and extend invitations to seasoned international racing drivers who have competed in esteemed championships such as F1, Indy Car, NASCAR, and WRC. We're seeking drivers and teams who have already left their mark and represented their nations on the prestigious stages of global motorsport," said Co-founder Stephen Watson.
Where will it take place?
Set circuits and street set-ups will be used across Europe, Asia Africa, and the Americas, with 8 to 10 rounds planned at the time of writing. Between September 2024 and March 2025, the Elite World Cup will take place during the traditional off-season of the racing calendar.
