New Formula K karting circuit and business park to re-open when lockdown lifts
Attention Gauteng Motorsport aficionados and petrolheads! The brand new Formula K karting circuit, race track and business park is on the map! If you’re a car and karting aficionado, and in need of the coolest possible car-orientated venue, Formula K will be the place to be as soon as motorsport gets the go-ahead again.
Formula K karting circuit and business park will officially re-open when lockdown ends
The highly-anticipated opening of the Formula K business park and accompanying kart circuit took place at the beginning of the year, with members of the motoring media, race teams, API property group, and prospective buyers all flocking to the new R140 million Rand facility to be a part of all the action.
AutoTrader’s very own George Mienie opened the event with a brief introduction of the project and then introduced API director and principal, Stephanus Weyers, to further elaborate on the project.
Formula K is situated just a few hundred metres from the N12 highway in Benoni, 5 minutes from OR Tambo International Airport and East Rand Mall, and is ideally located to allow access for events and also outgoing business from the park.
The 2km karting circuit was completed first, with construction of phase 1 of the attached business park to begin in January 2020. The circuit itself is internationally graded and can host FIA and CIK events and is now one of only 3 circuits in Gauteng, the other two being Zwartkops and Vereeniging.
Ultimately the entire project will house more than just the business units and track, but will incorporate lifestyle-oriented elements as well.
Features such as 4x4 trails, a BMX track, K53 learner driver centre, skidpan and a karting shop for hire and events, are all on the cards. There are a number of phases planned for the hub with each expanding on the last.
The launch and official opening day was an unbridled success, as the entire first phase of the business park was sold out by the close of the day.
After the main talking points had been covered, guests were invited trackside to officially open the circuit with a commemorative opening hot lap provided by a 50th anniversary Nissan GTR.
Karting is the easiest entry point into motorsports and the introduction of this circuit which has a greater proximity to most of the competitors in Gauteng, will give the sport a vital boost.
The business park itself is also a boost to local government and business, as the demand for industrial property far outstrips availability on the east rand and Formula K fills that gap perfectly as the rabid interest in the facility has shown.
