The Super Duty is engineered for those who need to carry heavy loads, tow large machinery, or tackle extreme off-road terrain. Here's what you need to know about it.
Code 10 power
The headlining feature of the new Ford Ranger Super Duty is its massive 4 500 kg Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) rating—classifying it as a Code 10 (C1) vehicle in South Africa.
To achieve this payload and towing figure, Ford overhauled the hardware:
TT frame architecture: Thicker frame steel with reinforced suspension, box, and towbar mounts.
Heavy-duty axles & 8-stud hubs: Featuring the largest, strongest rear differential ever fitted to a production Ranger.
Factory-fitted upgrades: Upgraded front/rear driveshafts and reinforced chassis components designed for severe commercial, mining, and agricultural applications.
Towing Tech
Onboard scales: Suspension-mounted sensors calculate your payload in real-time and display the weight directly on the infotainment screen.
Smart Hitch: Helps you measure towball weight to ensure your trailer is balanced correctly, preventing dangerous sway.
Pro-Trailer Backup Assist: Makes reversing with a trailer as simple as turning a dial.
Towing capacity: Comes with a standard 3 500 kg towball, with an optional uprated towball available to unlock the full 4 500 kg maximum towing limit.
Powertrain
All models are powered by the brand's 3.0-litre Turbo Diesel V6, detuned to 154 kW and 600 Nm in this guise, but still mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox.
For serious off-road durability, the Ranger Super Duty is built to take a beating:
Standard long-range tank: A massive 130-litre fuel tank protected by heavy-duty steel shielding.
Full underbody protection: High-strength bash plates shield the engine, transfer case, front diff, transmission, and fuel tank.
Off-road specs: Front and rear locking differentials come standard across all variants, alongside an 850 mm water wading depth and nearly 300 mm of ground clearance.
"We torture test our vehicles to earn the name Super Duty... The Ranger Super Duty had to continue working, even with 600 kilograms of mud stuck to the bottom of the truck."
— Ryan Searle, Director of Sales Operations, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.
