New Dayun Yuehu S5 is SA's most affordable, proper electric vehicle

South Africans who are keen to embrace the EV lifestyle but haven't been able to afford to go fully electric, have a reason to smile. Dayun's newly launched Yuehu S5 is the most budget-oriented electric passenger vehicle yet.

When will EVs finally get cheaper? The ball seems to be rolling, as Enviro Automotive has just launched their zippy mini-SUV, bringing electric mobility to a wider range of South Africans.

The Dayun Yuehu S5 comes in at just under R400,000, making it the most affordable electric passenger vehicle option in the country, not counting built-up quadricycles or two-seaters like the Eva City Blitz or the four-seater Eleksa CityBug with a 9kWh battery pack. This is a significant advantage, especially when considering the rising fuel costs, and the fact that you can't buy a proper EV under R539 900 - the price of the entry-level BYD Dolphin.

Does the Dayun Yuehu S5 offer enough power, range, and sufficiently quick charging?

Despite its budget-friendly price tag, the Dayun Yuehu S5 is not a bigger and more expensive Bajaj Qute. The Yuehu S5 has a single 35 kW electric motor capable of reaching a top speed of 100 km/h, and its 31.7 kWh battery offers a driving range of 330 kilometres, but this sounds a little too good to be true - we'll have to wait until we have one of these on test to bring you the real deal where range is concerned.

Enviro Automotive says the Dayun Yuehu S5 consumes a mere 10.7 kWh per 100 km and with a standard 220V charger, it takes about four hours to replenish its battery. Using a DC fast charger, recharging from 20% to 80% is said to take under an hour.

What about its size, interior features, and safety equipment?

The Dayun Yuehu S5 seems quite stylish and practical, offering a decent amount of interior space and leather seats. Its compact exterior dimensions make it perfect for a bustling city environment: It measures 3,695 mm (L), 1,685 mm (W), and 1,598 mm (H), with a 2,410 mm wheelbase, and these measurements are on par with cars like the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and Honda HR-V.

The Dayun Yuehu S5 offers an adjustable, multi-function steering wheel and a 7-inch LCD Infotainment screen, 8-inch central control screen featuring Dayun's Intelligent Car System with Bluetooth, navigation, media options, and climate control adjustments.

From a safety perspective, the S5 is constructed with high-strength steel, and features driver and passenger airbags, ABS, EBD, and a suite of other features.

Two models on offer: Standard and VIP

The Dayun Yuehu S5 comes in two variants: Standard and VIP. Both models are well equipped, but the VIP model boasts a few extra features like a SmartLink APP for remote control of the vehicle and an Electronic Fence security system.

Dayun Yuehu S5 Standard             R399,900

Dayun Yuehu S5 VIP                       R449,900
