More on Nelson Makamo

With roots in a town called Modimolle in Limpopo, it was clear from a young age that Nelson was gifted, with a creative spark that would see him soar to greater heights than many in his industry.  His work has been internationally recognised and has been bought by celebrities and various well-known collectors. He has even had his work displayed on the cover of TIME Magazine in a piece that showcases 34 individuals whose art has the chance of altering the way that we see the world.

How did this come about?

The story goes that Makamo spotted a Porsche 911 when he was a child, igniting a desire within him to own one of these sportscars. As an adult, Nelson moved to Franschhoek where he again spotted a 911, only a more modern version and this time, he realised his goal of owning a 911 was within reach.

He approached Porsche South Africa with his desire to purchase a 911, but also expressed his idea to totally customise the vehicle beyond what the German brand’s Exclusive Manufaktur department can provide. The project involved Makamo hand-painting various parts of his car at his studio in Gauteng before he sent the parts back to Porsche for the application of a clear coat, to protect his work.

The result is a totally bespoke Jet Black 992-generation 911 that Nelson has named ‘My Life in Motion”, with exterior and interior elements painted to reflect Makamo’s passion for art and his motivation, which is to inspire people. “This 911 is meant to inspire anyone to believe that they can succeed through their passion,” he remarked.

A word from Porsche

When asked about the project, CEO of Porsche South Africa, Toby Venter had the following to say; “Working with Nelson has been inspirational and this commission is on a level we’ve never seen before. This is a truly bespoke art installation worthy of any gallery. In addition, it illustrates the lengths Porsche South Africa will go to; the creativity and flexibility of our team to accommodate a request as personal as this. Porsche customers already have a virtually endless array of options available through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur to make their car completely individual, but then, when a unique customer such as Nelson chooses to do something extraordinary, we are delighted to accommodate his wishes.”
