A new version of BMW's iconic M5 is headed to local shores; here's what we know!

Drivetrain
The M5 now features the brand's M Hybrid system, which pairs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed gearbox, delivering a combined output of 535kW and 1 000Nm of torque sent through all four wheels via an M xDrive system. The combustion engine alone produces 430 kW and peak torque of 750 Nm, while the maximum output of the electric motor is 145 kW. This electrical component offers 280 Nm, but a pre-gearing stage allows effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450 Nm. As with the previous model, the M xDrive all-wheel drive system is a rear-biased 4WD Sport with a selectable 2WD mode. The suspension features a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, adaptive M suspension, and Integral Active Steering.
Performance
Performance appears striking, despite a hefty kerb weight of 2 444kg, nearly 500kg more than its predecessor! Top speed is restricted to 250 km/h, but with the optional M Driver's Package, this rises to 305km/h, while the 0-100km/h is claimed at 3.5 seconds. The vehicle boasts an electric-only range of 67-69 kilometres and can reach up to 140 km/h in this mode, courtesy of its 18.6 kWh battery.
Interior
The cockpit features M-specific controls, a flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel, and the BMW Curved Display with M-specific content. Standard amenities include Merino leather trim, four-zone air conditioning, and a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System.
Local availability
The new BMW M5 will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2024, with production commencing the same month and global market availability, including in South Africa, starting in the fourth quarter of 2024.
