What do you get with the JAC T9 Black Edition?
Rather than being a completely new T9 derivative, the Black Edition builds on the T9 Super Lux 4x4's specification and gives it a different visual identity. The most obvious change is the colour treatment. The grille, alloy wheels, roof rails, mirror caps, door handles and other exterior detailing are finished in black. The wheels measure 18 inches. The T9 range is offered in eight exterior colours: Star Grey, Grey, Silver, White, Black, Red, Yellow, and Blue.
Inside, the cabin uses a black leather-enhanced finish, giving the T9 a more upmarket appearance while also being intended to withstand the demands of everyday use. The Hunter version takes the theme a step further. It can be identified by Hunter graphics on the body and tailgate, while its standard equipment includes branded headrests and heavy-duty carpeting. Both Black Edition models come with several accessories already included in their respective prices. These include a nudge bar, style bar, tonneau cover and tow bar.
More than just a styling exercise
Underneath the Black Edition's exterior treatment is the familiar T9 mechanical package. The bakkie is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel incorporating direct injection, common-rail fuelling, an intercooler and EVGT technology. There are two different power outputs depending on the model. The regular T9 Black Edition produces 125 kW and 444 Nm, whereas the Hunter Black Edition increases those figures to 144 kW and 487 Nm.
An eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox sends the power through the drivetrain. Drivers can select among Sport, Normal, Eco, and Snow modes depending on conditions. JAC lists average fuel consumption at 7.8 L/100 km on the combined cycle.
JAC T9 4x4 and off-road equipment
For buyers interested in a bakkie that can venture beyond the pavement, the T9 Black Edition offers several features designed to improve traction. The four-wheel-drive system can be selected via a rotary controller in the cabin, with 4WD engagement possible up to 80 km/h. Low-range gearing is available when conditions become more demanding, while a rear electronic differential lock provides another means of improving traction.
The T9 is also rated to pull a 3,500 kg braked trailer. This gives the Black Edition the ability to cater for recreational applications such as towing camping equipment, in addition to everyday driving.

JAC T9 PHEV is also coming
The Black Edition isn't the only new T9 derivative planned for South Africa. JAC Motors says its T9 PHEV is scheduled to arrive during the fourth quarter of 2026. This version takes a very different approach to propulsion, combining a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric motors on both axles.
The resulting system produces 360 kW and 674 Nm. Energy comes from a 31.2 kWh battery, which allows for up to 100 km of electric driving. The battery can also be replenished via DC fast charging, with JAC quoting a 15%-80% charge time of 30 minutes.
JAC T9 endurance
JAC Motors has also used the T9 in a local endurance exercise. In April 2025, a T9 completed 4,084 km during a 24-hour run around the Gerotek oval track near Pretoria. The average speed was recorded at 170.1 km/h. A separate T9 involved in the same event was used to demonstrate fuel economy. It travelled 1 226 km using a single 76-litre tank, recording 6.2 L/100 km while averaging 115 km/h.
