Isuzu Motors South Africa has given its popular MU-X range a significant tech and safety injection for the 2026 model year. While keeping its rugged, go-anywhere DNA intact, the updated seven-seater SUV brings smarter driver assistance systems and welcome refinements to its entry-level powertrain to better compete in a highly contested segment.

Safety and Driver Assistance Upgrades
The headlines for the 2026 update centre around a much-improved active safety suite, particularly for the flagship variants.
Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control: Available for the first time on the model, this system comes standard on the top-tier Onyx XT derivatives. It automatically manages vehicle speed to maintain a safe gap from the traffic ahead.
Traffic Sign Recognition & Intelligent Speed Limiter: Utilising a forward-facing camera, this system detects posted speed limits and helps drivers avoid accidental speeding fines.
Dashcam-Ready Integration: Onyx XT variants now feature a dedicated USB port integrated directly next to the stereo camera system, making it easier to power a dashcam.
Powertrain Refinements
The Japanese marque has tweaked its engine line-up:
The 1.9-Litre Turbodiesel (LS Models): The 1.9-litre engine has undergone refinements. While power outputs remain unchanged at 110 kW and 350 Nm, Isuzu claims smoother power delivery and better fuel efficiency.
The 3.0-Litre Turbodiesel (LS, LSE, and ONYX XT Models): The 3.0-litre powerplant remains untouched, with the same 140 kW and 450 Nm.
Drivetrain: Both engines continue to be paired with Isuzu’s six-speed automatic transmission, available in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations depending on the trim level.

Headlamp Welcome Lights: All 2026 mu-X models now feature this function as standard. Remotely unlocking the SUV automatically illuminates the low beams and parking lamps to light up dark driveways or parking bays.
