Is the Toyota Corolla Cross good for long drives?

Hitting the road for a long journey? Find out if the Toyota Corolla Cross will be all the car you need.

Automotive News

If road-tripping is your idea of a good time, or whether you need to drive often and far for work or play, you'll undoubtedly want the best possible compact SUV to take you places.

If you want to know whether the Corolla Cross is good for long drives, you've come to the right place. Did you know that it's also manufactured right here in South Africa? That means you'll never be stuck with a courtesy car for weeks while the dealership tries to source the correct parts!

What makes the Corolla Cross suitable for long distances?

This is the GR-S model which has red interior highlights and leather seats.

The Corolla Cross is safe and spacious, its boot is large enough, its seats are supportive, and it has comfort and convenience features galore. It scored five stars in the EuroNCAP crash tests.

Which model should you pick?

If you're concerned with fuel consumption, pick one of the hybrids. It's true the hybrids work most efficiently in urban areas, but the average fuel consumption is still lower than the 1.8-litre models if you're counting petrol pennies.

The rear seat of the Corolla Cross has more legroom than the average compact SUV.

The naturally aspirated 1.8-litre models have four-cylinder petrol engines with 103 kW and 172 Nm. In comparison, the hybrids have a total of 90 kW and 142 Nm of torque coming from the electric motor and 18-litre engine. The fuel range for the hybrids is a realistic 837 km while the petrol-only model is said to be able to travel 691 km on a single tank, but in our real-life fuel consumption test, it wasn't quite as efficient - but still, we were impressed.

Our average fuel consumption in the naturally aspirated 1.8-litre model came to 7.7 litres per 100 km, but isn't quite the 6.8 l/100 km that Toyota suggests.

If you're more concerned with performance, get the normally aspirated 1.8. It packs a bigger punch than the hybrid so you'll have a bit more overtaking oomph.
