The Toyota Corolla Cross has been incredibly popular with SA's buying public, offering outstanding value in a hotly contested segment. We've covered the Corolla Cross at length, especially where safety and family-friendliness are concerned, but we haven't published its EuroNCAP safety rating yet.

The Corolla Cross gets a full five-star safety rating from the stringent European safety authority. The test was published in 2022 and the model tested was the hybrid variant, but the test applies to all Corolla Cross models. The Corolla Cross belongs to the class of 'Small Off-Road' vehicles.
Results
The Toyota Corolla Cross scored 85% for adult occupants, 83% for child occupants, 87% for vulnerable road users and 82% for its safety assistance systems.

Here's what EuroNCAP had to say:
"The passenger compartment of the Toyota Corolla Cross remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger.
"Toyota demonstrated that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. Dummy readings of compression indicated weak protection of the chest of the driver.
"Analysis of the deceleration of the impact trolley during the test, and analysis of the deformable barrier after the test, revealed that the car would be a moderately benign impact partner in a frontal collision. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of all critical body regions was good or adequate for both the driver and rear passenger.
"In both the side barrier impact and the more severe side pole test, protection of all critical body areas was good and scored maximum points in this part of the assessment. Control of excursion (the extent to which a body is thrown to the other side of the vehicle when it is hit from the far side) was found to be marginal.
"The Corolla Cross has a countermeasure to mitigate against occupant-to-occupant injuries in such impacts. Dummy results indicated good protection of the occupants' heads in the crash test. However, Toyota did not demonstrate that the centre airbag would provide robust protection to occupants of different sizes.
"Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric analysis of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection.
"The Corolla Cross has an advanced eCall system which alerts the emergency services in the event of a crash and a ‘Secondary Collision Brake’ system which automatically applies the brakes to prevent secondary collisions."

Verdict
The Toyota Corolla Cross is about as safe as a car can be for the segment it competes in - hence the five-star rating. It is, however, not going to be as safe as the larger and more advanced Toyota RAV4 in the segment above, for example. So, if you want an even higher safety score, you will have to spend more and buy the latest-generation RAV4, or even better, search AutoTrader for a pre-loved RAV4, right here.
