Is the Hyundai ix35 good for families?

The ix35 makes our list of SUVs that are the cheapest to service and maintain, so should you take the plunge and commit to ownership of one? We investigate how good the ix35 is at family life.

Automotive News

The ix35 is nothing but an older version of the Hyundai Tucson we know and love today, although it was named the Tucson before it became the ix35. But, whatever you choose to call it, the ix35 is a versatile vehicle that is suitable for everyone; new drivers, young couples, seniors, and everyone in-between.

Used ix35s can be had relatively cheaply, but low mileage models are scarce. Our ix35 listing with the lowest mileage on AutoTrader is a 2.0 Elite model with 51 000 km from 2015, for R255 900. Considering the price of a new entry-level car these days, it's a bit of a bargain, in comparison. What can you get in the new-car market these days, with price tags of R200 000 to R250 000? A Polo Vivo, a Kia Picanto, a Fiat 500?

If you opt for an ix35, you'll be assured of a car with a great safety rating for your most precious cargo.

Family friendliness

Safety

Those with little ones will be pleased to know that the ix35 has been considered to be very safe since it was first introduced in SA eleven years ago. Even then, six airbags were the going rate on all but the entry-level GL model, which had two. GLS models also had stability control. The ix35 range also boasted enhanced ABS braking with EBD and brake assist, a reinforced body shell, anti-submarining seats, and active headrests.

Space for the kids or the dogs, whichever you prefer! Make sure you opt for leather seats.

Convenience

The GL models have air-conditioning, an air quality system, air vents under the front seat, a driver foot-rest, a four-speaker two-tweeter sound system with a USB port and AUX input, 2 x 12V power sockets, 2 x vanity mirror, a rearview camera, a parking ticket holder on the driver’s side, one-touch windows, cruise control, fog lights in the front and rear, side indicators on the front fenders, and a rear window de-mister.

If you need leather seats, make sure you opt for a GLS model. It also offers comfort features such as dual-zone climate control, electric folding mirrors and cruise control with switchgear on the steering wheel.

The hard-wearing cabin is ideal for families.

In March 2014, the GL and GLS naming convention fell away and Hyundai opted to re-classify its ix35 models as Premium, Executive, and Elite, when the ix35 was face-lifted. The range now included a total of 6 models: Four petrols and two diesels. To see what each model entails, download the spec sheet here.

Verdict

The second row is spacious enough, and the boot is big enough for a baby stroller and a few additional bits and bobs. Safety features are comprehensive and comfort features are plenty. As we've already established, the ix35 is inexpensive to service and its parts basket is very affordable. If you're looking for a used SUV, you can do far worse than an ix35. Our technical expert, Martin Pretorius, advises that the diesel models are your best.
