Is a used Mazda5 a good car for families?

As our economic climate changes for the worst, car-buyers may have to opt for lower-spec models or older, higher mileage, used cars. If you've been thinking about buying a large SUV, maybe an older MPV like the second-generation Mazda5 might make more financial sense, especially if you'll mostly be driving kids around town.

Automotive News

The second-generation Mazda 5 made its appearance in 2010 but was discontinued locally a few years later, sadly. Moms (and female journalists) all across SA loved it so much, they voted it 2010 WOW Car of the Year.

Not the most beguiling design, but the Mazda5 is super user-friendly.

Reliability

Mazdas are known for being reliable and quality surveys about the Mazda5 all had similar results: buyers were very happy with their purchase in the short- and long-term. (In higher mileage cars, tired suspension components seems to be the main issue, so be sure to have this checked out before buying.)

Mazdas are mechanically sound and built to last, and have an excellent reputation in South Africa.

Engine & gearbox

The two-litre petrol models have good pulling power which is important, especially if there is a pair of buttocks on every available seat, and a boot full of luggage. The DOHC MZR 2.0 engine has a right-foot-friendly 106kW and 180Nm and fuel consumption is around 11 litres per 100 km in the city. All second-generation models in SA were available with 6-speed manual or auto-gearboxes for fuss-free commuting.

In flagship Individual trim, the Mazda5 has leather seats as standard.

Practicality

Speaking of people on seats, there are seven seats in total. The 6+1 seat configuration allows a walk-through passageway for easy access to the rearmost row. Sliding doors on both sides make life even easier.

MPVs are designed to be practical; looking good is an SUV's job...but the mature Mazda5 isn't ungainly.

Trim walk:

  1. Features on Original models include ABS, EBD, six airbags, a CD player, and satellite controls on the steering wheel. The Mazda 5 has a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating.
  2. Active models gain 17-inch alloys, a leather-covered steering wheel and trim knob, and a utility box.
  3. Top-of-the-range Individual models also have front fog lamps, electric sliding doors, cruise control, and leather seats.

Other alternatives?

We LOVE the Kia Grand Sedona. It's available new, but top-end models are getting a bit pricey. Older, pre-used models go for good prices, though. (The 2.2-litre diesel is the engine to have!) Read our Kia Sedona review (2019) here.

Other excellent, but now-discontinued MPVs to be found on the AutoTrader sales site, include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the Golf SV, Toyota Verso, and the Opel Meriva. (The Meriva sports a lively 1.4-litre turbo engine and is priced right!)
