What does the X mean?

The Wildtrak X offers a more off-road-focused experience, with a 30mm wider stance and a 26mm increase in ground clearance, making it a Ranger Raptor-rivalling 263mm. New 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 265/70 R17 General Grabber AT3 all-terrain tyres featuring white lettering for a sporty touch. Ford has also fitted Bilstein Position-Sensitive Dampers to improve the products' off-road credentials.

New features

Ford has also added a new driver assistance system in the form of Trail Turn Assist which is said to reduce the turning radius by up to 25% in off-road conditions (in 4H and 4L). The X is also available with a new Flexible Rack System as an option, allowing users to load items of various shapes and sizes while retaining a usable load area. Various semi-autonomous driver aids are standard, too, with Active Park Assist, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert and Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Lane Centering, Lane Departure Warning, and a 360-degree camera all fitted.

Cosmetic changes

From an exterior perspective, the X gets an off-road grille with integrated auxiliary driving lights, orange accents, a steel bash plate, cast aluminium side steps, and Wildtrak X badges.

Inside, there's an eight-inch digital instrument cluster and a portrait-oriented 12-inch touchscreen with the SYNC 4A operating system. The leather seats also feature suede trim, orange contrast stitching, and other suede accents.

Powertrain

Powering the Wildtrak X is the brand's 2.0-litre Biturbo diesel engine with 154kW/500Nm of torque paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. The big news is that this is the first four-cylinder Ranger fitted with the brand's on-demand four-wheel drive system with four modes - 4A, 2H, 4H, and 4L.

Pricing

Pricing has been set at R1 013 000, making it R10 400 less than the Wildtrak V6 diesel, meaning that only serious off-road buyers need apply.

Pricing includes a four-year/120 000km warranty, four-year/unlimited distance Roadside Assistance, and a five-year/unlimited distance corrosion warranty. Customers can also opt for service or maintenance plans up to eight years or 135 000km, extend the warranty to seven years or 200 000km, and add an extra one or two years to the Roadside Assistance.
