The 2020 Honda Civic Type R was uncovered at the Tokyo Auto Salon yesterday. There’s been several modifications and improvements made to the Type R’s winning formula which include revised styling, improved aerodynamic performance, and the addition of standard Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technology. The 2020 Type R will be released to overseas markets later this year.
To improve its already stellar driving dynamics, the new 2020 Civic Type R has been fitted with new two-piece brake rotors and new brake pads designed to reduce fade and improve high-speed braking efficiency. For better ride comfort, the suspension has undergone some revisions and will include updated dampers. Modifications have also been made to the front suspension to reduce friction and improve steering feel while stiffer rear bushings have been added for improved grip.
In terms of exterior design enhancements, there’s a new larger front grille opening for improved engine cooling, and the 2020 model will be offered in a new, Type R-exclusive Boost Blue.

Inside the 2020 Type R, refinement has also been improved with a new Alcantara™-wrapped steering wheel and a new shifter with a restyled knob and shorter shift throws. The Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies have also been added, marking the first time that Honda Sensing® will be available as standard equipment on all Civic models and trims.
Under the hood, the 2020 Civic Type R retains its race-bred 2.0-litre direct-injected and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with VTEC™ valvetrain putting out a peak 306 hp (228 kW) and 400 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. As before, drivers can adjust suspension firmness, steering and throttle response through the three driving modes – Comfort, Sport and +R.
A new feature for the 2020 model is the Active Sound Control, which modifies interior sound in concert with a chosen drive mode. The Type R is said to be a thrilling companion for the mountain roads or the racetrack, and also makes for a civilized daily driver.

New iconic paintwork option for 2020 NSX
The pinnacle of Honda’s sports car offering, the three-motor hybrid NSX supercar, also gets an update for 2020. The car will be available in a new ‘Indy Yellow Pearl II’ paint finish. This colour heritage was previously used on the original iconic NSX and S2000 models in Europe.
