Chery South Africa Updates Tiggo 4 Range

Since its local debut in late 2021, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro has been nothing short of a market disruptor. It didn't just enter the competitive compact SUV segment; it dominated it. By the end of 2025, the Tiggo 4 range solidified its "people’s favourite" status, racking up over 18 000 units sold in a single year and ranking as the fourth best-selling passenger vehicle in South Africa.

The brand has announced a significant mid-cycle refresh for its entry-level hero: the Tiggo Cross LiT.

Upgrades

Chery is adding a suite of premium features without touching the sticker price. This "more for less" strategy is exactly what helped Chery leapfrog legacy brands to become a Top 10 manufacturer locally.

What’s New in the LiT Models?

The upgrades focus on three pillars: Safety, Style, and Tech.

  • Updated aesthetics: Both the Manual and CVT models now sport LED headlights and a full-width rear light bar,  bringing the entry-level models in line with the more expensive Tiggo 7 and 8 aesthetics.

  • Safety: Chery has bolstered the safety kit with front side airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and a passenger seatbelt reminder. A rear-view camera is now standard, too.

  • Tech: The interior gets dual 10.25-inch screens (one for the instrument cluster, one for infotainment). Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a smart voice assistant are now standard.

  • Comfort Upgrades: Long-distance South African hauls are better catered for with faux leather seats, a rear centre armrest, and smart cruise control.

Local context

The Tiggo 4 is effectively the engine room of Chery South Africa. It accounts for nearly 80% of the brand's local volume. Its success is built on a specific formula: offering the space and appeal of a crossover, along with loads of standard features, at the price point of a budget hatchback.

With the recent news of Chery SA's plans to acquire the Nissan manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, the brand is shifting from a "newcomer" to a permanent pillar of the South African automotive landscape. Enhancing the Tiggo 4 range ensures that its high-volume seller remains fresh against newer rivals like the Suzuki Fronx and Toyota Starlet Cross.
