A slight change of plan...

The Golf 8 was due to arrive locally towards the end of 2020, but the pandemic had other plans and made its own adjustment to global automotive production. South Africans who couldn't wait to get their first glimpse of the new Golf in showrooms across the land, had to temporarily curb their enthusiasm.

But, the wait is almost over. According to Steffen Knapp, Head of the Volkswagen Passenger Car Brand, it's the global shortage of semiconductor chips that caused the delay, affecting all vehicles built on VW's MQB or Modular Transverse Matrix platform. This also affects certain Audi models.

So, when will it launch in SA?

“We are working closely with our German counterparts to ensure that we get as many Golf 8 GTI units for the local market as possible. A few Golf 8 GTI units started arriving in the country from mid-April. These units will be stockpiled until we have enough vehicles for the launch at the beginning of the third quarter,” added Knapp.

"The South African launch will include a digital South African premiere and countrywide customer events which will allow enthusiasts to be among the first to experience the new Golf 8", says Volkswagen SA.

Features to look forward to in the new Golf 8 GTI include a 2.0-litre TSI engine with 180kW, a front-axle locking differential, an all-new digital cockpit, matrix headlights, a stunning LED light signature in the front and rear, a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel, Car2X services, a mobile key, and an array of semi-autonomous features.

We cannot wait to drive it!
