BMW celebrates 50 years of 3 Series with limited edition model

With over 20 million units sold globally since 1975, the BMW 3 Series continues to be a powerful ambassador for the brand. The local production of this model and the many South Africa-specific derivatives make this an icon within SA. BMW has launched the 50 Jahre Edition of the 3 to celebrate this legacy and acknowledge the model's meaningful connection to the South African market.

Launched in 1975 to succeed the BMW 02, the 3 Series has evolved through seven generations to become the world’s best-selling premium car. The model’s significance is particularly profound in South Africa, where it has woven itself into the fabric of the local automotive industry. From the second to the sixth generation, the BMW 3 Series was produced at the BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, just outside Pretoria.

This local production facility not only supplied the domestic market but also led to the creation of unique, South Africa-only homologation models that are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. The plant's pivotal role was further cemented in 1994 when the BMW 3 Series became the first model to be exported from South Africa, a significant milestone for the country's manufacturing sector.

The 50 Jahre

To commemorate its 50-year milestone, BMW is releasing a special "50 Jahre Edition" for South Africa. Limited to just 50 units, this edition is based on the latest seventh-generation 3 Series, with models available in 320i and M340i xDrive variants. These cars pay homage to the model’s heritage by reviving paint finishes from its past: Aegean Blue and British Racing Green from the third generation, Stratus Grey from the fourth, and Lime Rock Grey from the sixth.

The special edition models are distinguished by a number of exclusive features. The British Racing Green 320i, for example, boasts a perforated Sensatec interior in a striking Cognac colour. All M340i xDrive cabins feature black Vernasca leather with blue contrast stitching. The interiors are further enhanced with aluminium trim and a CraftedClarity cut glass element for the gear selector.

Standard features on the 50 Jahre Edition for South Africa include the M Sport package, 19-inch wheels, Comfort Access, Park Assist Plus, Adaptive M suspension, Driving Assist Professional, and a Harmon/Kardon surround sound system.
