1. How can a customer decide what new car is right for them?

Garth - “Well,  the most obvious answer is to start your research online, have a look before going into the dealerships. You've got so much at your fingertips these days, you can actually go and research different types of vehicles and vehicles that best suit your needs.

So if you're looking for something sporty or something family orientated, you can literally go online, have a look, and all the information is at your fingertips before you even go in and physically look at the vehicle."

2. What should customers look for when on a test drive?

“Again, it all depends on the customer's needs and wants.

So if the customer is very interested in performance, then you would take the test on an open freeway to see how the acceleration is topping and bottoming how the gear ratio is run.

If the client's looking at purchasing an off-road vehicle, the best thing is to possibly take it on an off-road, to check and see how the vehicle operates off-road.

If the customer is looking for something comfortable and luxurious, then obviously you would need to test the features that it has to offer.

3. When a customer is coming to collect their brand new car is there anything they need to do beforehand?

“There definitely is a checklist. It all depends on whether the vehicle is being purchased through a financial institution or if it's being purchased cash.

Obviously first and foremost, we do request that the customer does get the vehicle insured and gives us proof of insurance before they drive off the showroom floor, not only to cover the dealer but also to cover the customer in the event of an accident.

Regarding what the customer would need, if they are financing the deal, they would need to bring in the original documents such as payslips, proof of address so the finance insurance manager can validate those documents, this is so that when you send all the documentation to the bank, it is a smooth process.

On a cash deal, all we need is the driver's proof of address, so that's quite a smooth transaction, but there is a checklist that we do give to the customer to bring documents, to bring with them in order to take the vehicle. ”

4. What should the customer avoid when buying a new car?

“Research dealerships to find those that are reputable, stay away from a dealership that doesn't really have a good name, so do a little bit of homework on the dealership before purchasing from them. Of course, visiting the dealership will also put your mind at ease, seeing that when you arrive it is a repeatable dealership. Ideally, it's a brand name, it's supported by the likes of McCarthy's or Barloworld or CMH or so on and so forth.

That's what I would look at and stay away from less reputable dealerships. ”

5. What are your final tips for anyone looking to buy a new car in Durban?

“I would say do your homework, identify what you really want and do a few comparisons, speak to the right people, go through an approved dealership such as CMH.

Make sure the dealership is recognised and that you're not going to be taken for granted, try and stay away from less reputable dealerships.”
