BMW M3 Competition package or BMW M4 Competition package = unadulterated racing feel and look

In the last stage of the BMW M3 coupé life, BMW added a Competition package option, comprising some race car criss-cross style alloy wheels, specially set up stability control, and electronic damper control with Sport mode.  It made the M3 look and feel more racecar-ish.

The BMW M5 and BMW M6 in their current forms are also offered with a Competition package, including different wheels, more power, more speed, more money.  For the M6, this applies to all 3 body styles:  M6 coupé Competition package, M6 GranCoupé Competition package and M6 convertible Competition package, as reported.

Now, with the BMW M3 and BMW M4, BMW has introduced a Competition package – unlike the abovementioned previous M3 Competition package, the new M3 and M4 Competition package gains more power, as is done for M5/M6.

BMW raises the Competition package

The Competition package from BMW M GmbH has the same contents on M3 sedan and M4 coupé and M4 convertible (this package was not previously available on M3 convertible) giving its owner added sporty personality with enhanced dynamics.

The straight-six M Power turbo engine as put to use in the M3 and M4 certainly do not want for anything in the M Power department, with 317kW showing on the power graph across a flat 5500-7300 peak… yet BMW decided to push it to 331kW, adding the extra 14kW to be available starting at a higher-revving (sportier) 7000 (un-turbo-like) revs.

Performance is trimmed by 0.1 seconds for the 0-100 km/h standard measure, reducing the already-quick 4.1 (M3/M4 coupé M-DCT auto) to 4.6-second (M4 convertible manual) times to the 4.0 - 4.5 bracket.  Cars in South Africa will be standard-spec with the M Driver’s package which sees the top speed restriction lifted from 250 to 280 km/h (though not for public roads in this country).

Fuel consumption and emissions remain the same as the standard cars…  they say.

Unadulterated racing feel, and look – the Competition package unpacked

BMW says, excitedly, that this Competition package from the BMW M Division gives an “unadulterated racing feel” – helping to give this feeling include some tasty items,  unpacked here:

• specially-tuned Adaptive M Suspension to provide optimal road contact for better traction (much needed – refer our BMW M4 convertible auto review)
• new calibration of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control)
• Active M differential (think high-tech limited-slip diff)
• M lightweight sport seats equipped with width-adjustable backrests (for better seat grip when going through bends or sideways) with vertical openings
• front seat belts with M tri-colour striping
• sports exhaust system (hardly needed, as the standard quad-pipes are loud)
• 20” M light alloy wheels in Star-spoke Style 666 M, gloss-lathed (if these wheels look familiar, they are the same as on the BMW M4 GTS, without the orange   inserts)
• front 265/30 R20 and rear 285/30 R20 tyres
• BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim (an option on the standard cars, changing the matt black window frames for gloss black)
• BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim with extended features, meaning a gloss-black kidney grille (chrome-free black grille, as seen lately on some personalised BMWs) and further de-chromed gloss black for the gills, rear M3 / M4 bootlid badge and black-chrome-plated tailpipes.
