What is the Competition Package?

The turbo 4.4 V8 fitted to the “standard” BMW M6 puts out 412kW from 6000 through 7000 r/min and 680Nm of BMW M torque between 1500 and 5750 r/min. 

The previous Competition Package upped the kWs by 11kW to 423, with Nms at an unchanged 680.  For the new BMW M6 Competition Package, the numbers have both been turned up to 441kW and 700Nm (meaning +29kW +20Nm) delivered at 6250 and 1500-6000 r/min, respectively.

Performance improves (not that it needed improvement) over the standard 412kW M6 by 0.3 seconds for the 0-100km/h sprint, quoting 3.9 seconds for the BMW M6 coupé Competition Package and BMW M6 Gran Coupé (4-door) Competition Package, while the slightly heavier BMW M6 convertible Competition Package taking an even-numbered 4.0 seconds.

An extra 55km/h top-end versus the standard M6 is thanks to inclusion of the BMW M Driver’s Package, to up derestrict the 250km/h limited top speed to a supercar-rivalling 305km/h.  This package of R 36 800 can also be ordered separately on standard M6 cars, which is value included in the Competition Package.

But the Competition Package is about more than just more power and outright speed.  Handling is sharpened up thanks to firmer springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, using an adapted Dynamic Damper Control setup.  The control unit on the Active M Differential (a smart type limited-slip diff in the rear axle) further improves traction, allowing the driver to accelerate more BMW M-like out of bends.  The Servotronic speed-sensing steering has more direct mapping, and the M Dynamic Mode is altered to allow more sporty handling.

Does it look or sound different to other BMW M6s?

Yes, it does, both.  The BMW M6 Competition Package is distinguished from standard M6 by the inclusion of specific 7 double-spoke M rims of 20-inch – the standard M6 coupé and convertible are fitted with 265/40 R19 front and 295/35 R19 rear tyres, though most buyers opt for the 5 double-spoke 20-inch rims with 265/30 R20 front and 295/30 R20 tyres at the back.  The M6 Gran Coupé already has 20-inch rims as standard, in a unique-to-model design.

If you don’t like these skinnier spokes that come with this package for coupé and convertible, you can opt for the chunkier-looking 5-double spoke as found on the standard M6, for R 21 500.  The Gran Coupé keeps its utterly gorgeous standard wheels.

A sports exhaust provides more sound (but if you’re expecting a proper V8 sound from a BMW M V8, be it standard or sports exhaust, you’ll be sorely disappointed) tipped with black-chrome tailpieces to finish off the look.

The package prices for these upgrades?

The Competition Package, which includes the R 36 800 cost of the BMW M Driver’s Package, is R 147 600 on the BMW M6 coupé and M6 convertible, but a slightly lower R 134 000 on the M6 Gran Coupé as it already has an upgrade from 19 to 20-inch wheels.
