Transport industry unites to treat truckers

Truck drivers perform a vitally important job. Without them, we would not have food to eat, beer to drink, furniture for our homes, medicines… the list is endless. Now, in an acknowledgement of their important role, a symposium has been arranged in Johannesburg during March – and truck drivers can attend free of charge.

Role of truck drivers

According to Healthy Heads, the transport, warehousing and logistics industries face unique challenges that can impact the mental health of these workforces. “Long hours, isolation, and high-pressure environments contribute to heightened stress and mental health concerns. There is a pressing need for industry-specific mental health support and interventions to address these issues and promote a culture of well-being and safety,” it notes.

A total of 3.54 million truck drivers were employed in the United States in 2022. According to the American Trucking Association, after just one day without truck drivers, hospitals would begin running out of basic supplies; service stations would begin to run out of fuel, food shortages would rise – and normal life would be impossible.

While we don’t quite have the same number of truck drivers here in South Africa, their role is equally essential. Our road freight sector transports an estimated 140 million tonnes per annum – and this wouldn’t happen without truck drivers.  Yet, their role is seldom acknowledged. Yes, we have wonderful programmes in place, like the fabulous #ThankYouTrucker– which is sponsored by Iveco.

But what about initiatives to tackle the important subject of driver health? After all, truck drivers encounter various health challenges. These include limited access to medical facilities during their journeys, inadequate ablution facilities, and insufficient proper sleeping areas at truck stops. Unhealthy food choices and a sedentary lifestyle also contribute to all sorts of health issues – from obesity to cardiovascular diseases.

Safety and Wellness Symposium for Truck Drivers

These challenges are being addressed by an all-new symposium for truck drivers. Hosted by the Department of Transport (DoT) in collaboration with the SaferStops Association, the Truck Driver Safety and Wellness Symposium takes place in Johannesburg next month.

Drivers will be able to check into the venue, the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, on 6 March, and check out two days later. The actual symposium takes place on 7 March. Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, will deliver the opening address.

Delights for drivers

Nicci Scott-Anderson, the founder of the SaferStops Association, says she has poured her heart into co-creating this event. “With the help of partners, sponsors and the DoT, the symposium is set to be this year's highlight in the transport industry. I am pleased to say that it was easy to find sponsors who were thankful for the chance to support truck drivers. Our aim is to spoil our drivers and offer them support and care so that they may make informed decisions when it comes to addressing their health and safety,” she explains.

So, what’s in store for the truck drivers?  Attendees will explore pioneering research as SaferStops presents findings from 1,500 truck drivers, highlighting the essential support and amenities desired at truck stops. Participants will engage in a panel discussion alongside representatives from government, addressing pressing industry issues.

Virgin Active will invigorate attendees with a workout, ensuring energy and readiness for the day. Engen will introduce new, healthy meal options that are offered at its truck stops.

Health and well-being will be at the forefront, with attendees accessing comprehensive medical checks, including complimentary spectacles for those in need. They will also enjoy neck and shoulder massages and benefit from hydration assessments to ensure optimal health. Drivers will attend a masterclass teaching them how to draw up a will. Furthermore, through collaboration with Ctrack, attendees will register for the SaferStops App, offering armed guard support in high-risk situations. A free subscription will extend to their families.

The event concludes with a gala dinner braai, sponsored by Michelin, where attendees can relax and network. With over 15 exhibitors showcasing health and wellness solutions and Volvo displaying its latest electric vehicle technology, attendees will be at the forefront of industry innovations.

It sounds like great fun and a real treat – which is exactly what our truck drivers deserve!

  • Sponsors of the event include Gud, Iveco, Jonsson Workwear, Hollard, DoT, Ctrack, Volvo, Absolute Water, UD Trucks, Virgin Active, MedSure Global, TruckFuelNet (TFN), Santam, Trucking Wellness, Commercial Transport Academy and, of course, the SaferStops Association.
