MAN targets diesel bills with new generation fuel-efficient trucks
Diesel remains one of the largest operating costs for South African transport operators. Against this backdrop, MAN Truck & Bus South Africa’s launch of its next-generation D26 Efficiency engine platform comes as welcome news for the industry, with fuel savings of up to 6% now up for grabs. For fleets running multiple long-haul trucks, these efficiency gains could translate into savings of hundreds of thousands of rand each year.
Why fuel efficiency matters more than ever
For transport operators, diesel expenditure often represents the largest portion of running costs after vehicle finance. Long distance trucks can cover hundreds of thousands of kilometres over their working life, burning large volumes of fuel in the process.
A saving of just a few percentage points can therefore make a meaningful difference. For example, if a long-haul truck consumes tens of thousands of litres of diesel annually, even a modest efficiency gain could reduce fuel costs significantly over the course of a year. Multiply that across an entire fleet and the numbers quickly become substantial.
In an industry where margins are often tight and freight rates under pressure, improvements in fuel efficiency can help operators protect profitability while maintaining competitive pricing.
New engine technology targets consumption
At the centre of the latest efficiency gains is MAN’s updated D26 Efficiency engine platform, a 12.4 litre inline six-cylinder engine that will be deployed across the manufacturer’s heavy duty truck range.
The engine introduces several technical changes aimed at improving thermal efficiency and reducing mechanical losses. These include higher injection pressure for improved fuel atomisation, optimised turbocharging and revised combustion characteristics.
A redesigned friction package featuring steel pistons and optimised bearings also helps reduce internal mechanical losses, contributing to improved fuel efficiency and potentially longer service life.
In Euro 5 applications the new engine platform delivers fuel savings of up to 3% compared with the previous generation. In Euro 2 configurations the improvement can reach up to 6%, thanks to a combination of engine, transmission and drivetrain enhancements.
Driveline upgrades play a key role
The fuel efficiency improvements are not the result of the engine alone. MAN has introduced a package of drivetrain upgrades designed to maximise efficiency in real world operating conditions.
These include the latest generation TipMatic automated gearbox, which incorporates SmartShifting technology to enable faster and smoother gear changes while minimising interruptions in tractive force.
The system offers a range of driving programmes that adapt gearshift patterns to vehicle load, terrain and driver input. This allows the vehicle to balance performance, fuel consumption and component longevity.
A new generation of hypoid rear axles has also been introduced. These feature lighter housings, optimised bearings and longer final drive ratios designed to reduce fuel consumption on long haul routes.
Additional efficiency gains available
Beyond the core powertrain improvements, additional fuel savings can be achieved through a range of aerodynamic and electronic features. These include aerodynamic body elements designed to reduce drag as well as digital mirror camera systems that can further improve airflow around the vehicle.
Predictive cruise control technology that uses topographical data to optimise gear changes and throttle inputs is also expected to further enhance fuel efficiency during long distance operations. Depending on vehicle configuration and operating conditions, these technologies can help fleets maximise the benefits of the new drivetrain.
Lower costs, higher safety
While fuel efficiency is a major focus, the new generation trucks also introduce expanded driver assistance and safety technologies. These include emergency braking systems capable of detecting vulnerable road users, adaptive cruise control and digital mirror camera systems designed to improve driver visibility.
Enhanced braking systems, including high performance engine braking and optional retarders, also help reduce wear on service brakes while improving downhill control. For fleet operators, the combination of lower fuel consumption, improved safety systems and longer component life contributes to a lower overall cost of ownership.
Efficiency becoming a competitive advantage
As transport companies face rising costs and increasing pressure to operate sustainably, efficiency improvements are becoming an increasingly important differentiator. A 6% reduction in fuel consumption may appear modest at first glance. However, across long distance routes and large fleets the financial implications can be significant.
