IAA Transportation: bigger, better and a whole lot more fun
The IAA Transportation 2024 – which kicks off next week – is set to be bigger and better than ever before. That – in a nutshell – was the news to emerge from the IAA Transportation press conference, which took place on September 5. The fair – one of the most significant events in the global transport and logistics industry – will be held in Hannover, Germany, from 17 to 22 September. We will be there!
Oscars of transport
One of the most debated – and most anticipated – events at the IAA will be the Stars of the Year 2024 awards ceremony, which takes place on September 16 (which also happens to be the press day). This event – which is basically the Oscars of the transport industry – will see the following awards being presented:
- International Truck of the Year
- Truck Innovation Award
- International Bus of the Year
- International Van of the Year
- International Trailer of the Year
We will report on the winners of these extremely prestigious awards after the conclusion of the IAA.
20% increase in exhibitors
But, of course, the IAA is not only about awards. It’s also about stands displaying products, services, technologies and all sorts of cool stuff. This year, more than 1,650 exhibitors from 41 countries are expected, marking a 20% increase versus the 2022 IAA Transportation. It is interesting to see the increasing globalisation of the fair; this year, an incredible 73% of exhibitors are coming from abroad – a record high. Over 145 world and trade fair premieres are set to be showcased under the theme “People and Goods on the Move”, and – as always – there will be a strong focus on both current and future industry challenges (of which, sadly, there are many).
Hildegard Müller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), addressed the press conference, and she emphasised the crucial role of the commercial vehicle sector in achieving global climate goals. She noted the current challenges the industry faces, such as the need for infrastructure expansion, labour shortages, rising energy costs, and geopolitical uncertainties. But it wasn’t all bad news…
“The automotive and commercial vehicle industry is clearly on the path of transformation, and the IAA Transportation demonstrates that we already have the products for climate-neutral and digital mobility of the future,” said Müller. “The goals are clearly defined, the innovations are ready for series production – now the vehicles need to hit the road. For this, the appropriate framework conditions are necessary, along with a strategic, integrated industrial policy agenda that enables the expansion of the necessary charging infrastructure.”
Müller further stressed the importance of a coordinated approach, involving various stakeholders such as energy companies, grid operators, and government bodies to achieve climate neutrality in transport.
Battery-electric and hydrogen in the spotlight
So, what are the innovations to which she refers? Visitors will be able to see many products boasting battery-electric drives and hydrogen technologies. A major feature will be the much-needed Megawatt Charging Systems (MCSs), which offer efficient charging solutions for heavy commercial vehicles (because they charge electric trucks in a jiffy). The event will also see an increase in the number of exhibitors from van and battery cell manufacturers, hydrogen producers, and software and technology companies, reflecting the diverse – and changing – landscape of the transport and logistics industry.
Get into the driver’s seat
But visitors won’t only be able to see the vehicles; they will also be able to hop into the driver’s seat and test them. In fact, visitors will be able to experience the latest commercial vehicles – including electric and hydrogen vehicles – from over 20 manufacturers. During the press conference, Müller highlighted the significance of these experiences: “Innovations are only successful when they are embraced by society. The IAA Test Drives are a unique global opportunity to experience electromobility in the commercial vehicle sector,” she said.
A family affair
While the IAA is very much a business affair, with many multimillion-euro deals being concluded at the show, it’s also a family affair. This year, the exhibition will host the IAA Driver and Family Weekend, scheduled for 21-22 September, which aims to celebrate the contributions of drivers in the logistics industry. The weekend will feature attractions such as the official Truck Racing Paddock of the FIA racing series, a truck driving school, and live entertainment on an outdoor stage. Visitors can also enjoy the Solar Ferris Wheel, offering a unique view of the event.
While families have fun, industry leaders, experts, and policymakers will debate and discuss the future of transport. And we will be racing around the fair, gathering the latest news from the world of transport. Stay tuned for all the news from the show!
