4 farming implements that you should consider

We recently gave you our list of entry level tractors to consider if you are doing small scale or homestead farming. That being said, a tractor is not the only thing that you need, farming implements are just as important. Where does one start? What are the best implements needed to reduce work time as well as increase efficiency on your small farm? We have compiled a list of some implements to consider.

 

1. Mower: Or grass cutter is high on our list because it allows you to effectively cut long grass in areas where you need the grass shortened. These attachments fit onto just about any tractor and drastically reduce the amount of time and energy needed to cut veld grass. They also provide a solution to protecting your farmland by giving you the ability to cut along your fences in preparation for fire-brakes. These mowers help remove bushes and small trees and prevent your fields from becoming over grown reducing the risk of ineffective land. It is advisable to first walk the area to remove large rocks to prevent damage to the blades.

 

2. Rakes: Once your grass has been cut one will need to rake it up to remove the cut grass. Rakes are easily attached to the rear of a tractor and can effectively tidy up an area, removing dead grass, leaves and other unwanted items. Keeping an area clean not only makes your farm look good but it also reduces the risk of fires spreading. The rakes can effectively collect the cut grass and place it in such a way that balers car collect the cut grass and roll into hay bales for a more efficient process.

 

 

3. Balers: As mentioned above, rakes and balers work hand in hand and that is why the baler has made it to number three on our list. Balers can collect the grass and roll it into bales which can be used for animal feed. Having a good baler and making use of the cut grass for feed better utilizes the farm land at a relatively low cost.

 

 

4. Ploughs: Ground working machinery such as a plough is also a very important implement that you should consider for your small farm or homestead. Ploughs attach to the back of tractors and can be dragged over the prepared farmland. The machine makes light work of digging up the soil in preparation for planting of seeds. A good tractor and a decent plough can reduce the time of field preparation by days. These implements not only reduce the amount of time needed to plough a field but they also improve efficiency and effectiveness which can drastically lower costs.
